What can I replace my aluminium sliding door with

Hi,

I’m looking to upgrade all windows and front and back door of my house. Just trying to figure out what to do with the oversized aluminium slider. It’s approx 238cm wide and 227cm high.

Ive had 2 window suppliers out to measure and they’ve recommended french doors with some variation of side and top lights. I’m not against it but for the rough costs they’re giving I’m wondering if I could do something more aesthetic or with less visible framing. Any window experts here able to recommend a potential solution and approx cost?

Sorry to state the obvious here but a replacement with a new aluminum thermally broken lift and slide?

Nothing’s obvious to me Jimmy! I’ve no idea what the options are. We were even wondering if we could keep it and just do the rest of the windows and the front door, it doesn’t feel drafty or cold when you’re beside it.

Appreciate the suggestion, any idea what it would cost for our opening size?

I only bought the house but it was built in 1970, no idea what’s been done to it since bought.

Dont know if anything can be told from a photo but one attached. Also considering replacing the glass with more modern double glazing. I know it wouldn’t be as effective as a whole new door and system but it would be cost effective and we might end up extending from that wall in the coming years anyway.

Very, very similar to my front sliding door, almost an exact match except for the black handle. Mine dates from 2003, if that's any help. You might notice a sand-blasted stamp in a corner of the glass and it might have a year.

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately there’s no stamp or labelling anywhere on the door/glass.

I think we should get some improvement from replacing the glazing and resealing around the door. Going to price that up and give it a go.

A lot of the benefit in new windows is in the superior frames. Replacing the glass wont achieve that. Of course replacing the whole thing is pricey.

I would go with the french doors, as the running gear on the sliders eventually deteriorate and it becomes a drag on the lower back/shoulders as you get older

If opening out make sure they have restrainers on them to stop them swinging in the wind.

In saying that - it's very true - but I found a guy online who replaces the rollers and he had the whole door refreshed and oiled for less than 200 there two years ago. So that's an option if the French doors won't work like in my case where they are on a front porch.
