Regardless of height, his performances have been overstated. It seems like because of the early criticism United fans feel the need to big him up to overcompensate.

Yet another Rodri tackle that should be a yellow, but it's not given.

it reminds me of when man utd and England managed to deceive themselves into thinking Wayne Rooney could play midfield. Just didn’t have the body type for it.

this is less clear cut, I’m prepared to be convinced that he can fit the bill but we’ll see.

Almiron can say his finishing was like Grealish's before this season...

Rodri gets away with a ridiculous amount of fouls

You must be baffled why Vestergaard isnt in the running for Ballon D'Or.

I assume those posters must worship Allardyce and think his Bolton side would put manners on Pep/Rijkaards Barcelona mini teams.

Puyol isnt fit to tie Zat Knights boots.

i didn’t say centre halves had to be extremely tall so no.

Speaking of Haaland, do ye remember the funny debate about who would be the better signing/who was the better striker between himself and Nunez?

Popped up tonight from a Liverpool fan in my friend group, saying how he is prepared to admit defeat in it.

If they keep him fit he will own the single season records

If height is as key as you keep making out it obviously is. Unless of course you have a maximum height to go with your minimum height for the ideal "body type"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,687 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Nah, he was a good footballer still just hadn’t near the legs to get around the park like a midfielder has to. His body type was similar to Arda Turan … and no other elite midfielder I’ve seen.

Rooney covered so much ground in his career I can't believe that post above me is serious.

He was a striker, he was not a midfielder he was just so good you could have played him anywhere on the pitch and he would have survived.

When "body type" is seen as any way relevant you know ACTUAL gameplay is irrelevant.

Only a lunatic would have picked Nunez over Haaland. Haaland is a generational talent and with the amount of chances that City create he was always going to score tonnes of goals.

Nunez has done fine so far with five goals and three assists in 11 games (700 minutes). Missed some easy chances but he's creating plenty and getting into those good positions, you'd be more worried of he wasn't getting into good positions. Once things click and his confidence returns he'll score plenty.

He's also been a bit of a victim of Liverpool playing awfully for the first few months of the season where even Salah looked poor.

Either way I'd say Antony would be a better comparison this season as both have very similar careers before coming to the PL, similar age and similar fees. I couldn't tell you how he's done this season though.

I remember plenty of lunatics alright, I don't remember anyone having a debate on whether Antony or Nunez would be a better striker though, probably as Antony isn't a striker? Antony was less impressive than Ziyech at Ajax and his fee was infuriating. In what way did they have similar careers actually?

The only thing I remember at the time of Antony signing in fact was cracking up that it gave me less ammunition about overpaying on players to jeer the lads about since we had gone and done arguably worse.

Will see in time I suppose, all I see of Nunez is a new meme clip of his misses and that kind of stuff after each game. I get to watch the Antony underwhelm more often of course :)

Probably because Antony was signed much later in the window as well. I definitely brought up the comparison on here though.

Nunez has played a fair bit from the LW position this season because of the injuries so it's probably a fair enough look so far.

And we can go see the Fidget Spinner meme for Antony. I wouldn't get to bogged down by those though or people who seem to get agitated by them or use them to mock others.

If either player is helping their team through goals, assists, creating chances etc then they are doing fine.

I’m not saying height is the only important thing when it comes to centre halfs. But it’s important, along with other things, if you want top centre halfs. But maybe 99.9% of elite coaches don’t know what they are doing by picking centre halfs who are also good in the air.

Yours, Paddy Souey Saint & Greavsie Power.

And the league needs a ref that will properly deal with Rodri, it’s a joke.

So now we know that you dont know "good in the air" and "height" arent the same thing.

Explains why you stick with meme analysis.

Cannavaro is lucky not to have ever encountered an elite coach like doc in his career.

A better comparison for Nunez would be lukaku, two players who are very powerful and pacy but lacking real technical quality (at the very top level) the combination of power and pace enables then to get into great positions but the lack of quality will leave fans frustrated and against top defenders are a let down more often then not.

Nunez will score goals no doubt but in 2.5 out of 3.5 seasons he scores less goals per shot then lukaku has on average through his career, lukaku massively outperformed his xg one season and got a move to united as did Nunez last season at benfica.

He is young and people can always improve but composure and calmness in front of goals is a skill that seems more innate then most.

The best teams have centre backs who are good in the air and can read the game. Martinez is grand, he’s grand. But that’s it. An understudy to Otamendi for the national team. Lots of top 4 teams have one really good centre back and another who is average. But the top teams have two of them. And you can call that whatever kind of analysis you want but it’s a fact.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,954 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Its know as the Wan Bissaka effect . Im joking

Martinez is a good defender ,In my opinion he's not quite up there with the very best in the league but he is a good & very steady & his good attitude seems to rub off on others ,He's a upgrade on Maguire & Lindelof ,

Here's a good question who's been better Martinez or Botman , I think its Botman but the Man United player will get the eyes

Sure your buddy want making a tongue in cheek joke?

Can’t say I saw that being an actual serious conversation among any Liverpool circles. I mean, there will always be some morons in any fan group who haven’t a notion what they’re talking any, but that wasn’t a conversation I saw with any traction anyway. The pundits around the charity shield tried to make a bit of a thing of it to have something to talk about alright, but that’s about it…

Nunez has a league goal every 138 mins this season so far. It's his debut season in the PL and is relatively inexperienced in top level football.

If he scored goals at the same rate over a full season playing every minute, he would score 25 league goals. And that's without taking penalties.

Assuming he plays the same games:mins ratio for the rest of the season and he scores/assists at his current rate, without any improvement, he will finish on around 21 goals & 10 assists in all comps.

He is currently missing chances alright and his conversation rate is not where it should be. But all strikers miss big chances. Haaland himself missed a couple last night, Kane misses big chances too. Nunez is getting scrutinized now because he doesn't score alongside the missed chances. But he was before the World Cup. I'd be lot more worried if he wasn't getting into that positions regularly.

If this is his him when he is bad, well I can't wait to see him when he is good.

Didn't the Nunez/Haaland lunacy reach its peak around the charity shield final? There was definitely loads on here saying Nunez was looking the better deal after that match.

He had the better game and that was a huge focal point of the punditry since there’s fck all else to talk about with a friendly match, but no, no one seriously thought he was actually a better player than Haaland.

Nunez is doing grand on his own terms. A comparison with probably the best out and out CF in the world just isn’t really necessary.
