Thermal camera to see heat loss performance

That's a pity I thought they the thermal leak detector was one but looks like it's just a big digital thermometer

They are dropping quickly in price. You can buy a usable 32x24 pixel sensor based one now for cheap:

Yeah, library one doesn't include a thermal camera. I borrowed one a few months back. Has a laser infrared thermometer which you can move around to see temp changes on a digital display. It's deffo worth using that too to get a sense of wall temps, doors, windows..... So a good starting point. I bought one myself for about €25 afterwards. I noticed one wall that gets damp in the bottom corner has a lower temp than the rest of the room. So I've to check why that is. But know I now it needs to get checked.

I've been using thermal imaging equipment for more than 2 decades and have probably analysed more than 100k images in that time. Knowing what to look for and pick up on the important points depending on building type, construction method, outdoor conditions etc is key and may not be very obvious to the ordinary person, no different really to me trying to analyse an MRI scan image of my head versus an experienced / trained radiographer.

A 2 degree drop around windows could be thermal bridging or air leakage depending on image characteristics for instance. Or both!

Pointing a infrared device at glazing will in all likelihood give a false reading, another example of possibly drawing a wrong conclusion.
