I have 221 RWD and back in October I left from the Supercharger at Castlebellingham northbound with 99%, went to Belfast, down to Bray and then pulled into the Supercharger at Sandyford with 4%. So ~320km, mostly on motorways took 95%. That's not taking into account parking in Belfast for about 4 hours and a ton of sentry events.

I do 10mins from Sligo town to Dublin (blanch area) or airport and back very regularly in my September bought M3 standard range on 19inch wheels. It's roughly 400 km return trip and I can't do it without a charge on the way home. I'd say I could push it with the extra buffer in the battery but wouldn't chance it in winter. About 80km of that at motorway speed. I usually travel via Cavan down the M3 but tend to prefer the M4 on the way home for quick Enfield super charge. I usually only need to stop for 10 mins or so.

    Fair enough!

Im thinking of a Long Range or a Performance and a new car. I’m current spending between €600 and €800 per month on diesel so I’m just trying to see if it’s is a viable option for me. The cost of the finance should be offset by the savings, or so I hope.

In general terms I think for your journey you can expect to get about 370kms from a 100% charge (thats in the RWD model which has a WLTP 491km although you will be hard pressed to get that range in the real world). The LR model has a WLTP of 602 km so my guess is that you would get in the real world driving an additional 70/80 kms, so maybe 440km range. There are lots of variables, outside temperature, speed, driving style , AC that influence but I suspect if you drive for work you will be doing reasonable speeds. Realistically you may need to factor in a stop for a small "Boost charge" . If you use a Tesla Supercharger sites it is lightening quick and you can reasonably expect to take on around 200+km charge in 15 mins Again there are variables here as battery takes on charge faster when lower % charge. Bear in mind also that the difference between RWD model and Long Range is a substantial €15.7K, so it depends on how you value the difference. All of the above is general info so digest carefully as there are many influencing variables. Hope I haven't confused

My performance averages about 194 Wh/km in summer and about 210 Wh/km in winter.

Easy motorway driving keeps the consumption down.

Mine is also 2020 so the newer heat pump versions may be a tad more efficient.

Short trips contribute big time, I was 192 Wh/km for my trip the other night but after an hour at 100km speed had dropped to 172 Wh/km, was 0 to -1 outside

I've been driving my Dec 2021 M3P ( MIC with heat-pump) just a year next week & with 32,000 kms , my life time average is 178 Wh/km

I usually see 120-130 Wh/km in warmer months, atm around 150. Average to date 137 Wh/km.

Helped no doubt by my lack of motorway driving, being rural. Cannot go much harder without loosing my licence.😊

    March 2022 RWD.

That’s good. My 5000km average (since I bought) is 210.

It has jumped in the last month due to the colder weather.

Obviously with the LR and Perf versions, you won’t get the SEAI grant of 5k. But the bulk of the finance will be offset by fuel savings, especially if you keep as much of the charging at home as possible. Tesla is really accurate at getting you to your destination with as little charge left as possible to save on time and (when home) money. If you need 30% to get you from a charge point to home, it will advice you stop charging after 35%, give or take.

Got my Model 3 back in September and haven't been back in here much since - thought I'd give a quick thought on my experience so far. I'm preaching to the converted here I know but its simply amazing - there is literally nothing I can speak of in a negative way other than two points which I'll list at the end. Everything is so easy to use, its a dream to drive and still has that new car excitement even after a few months. I had an issue with one of the side mirrors in that it wasn't returning to its correct setting after changing profiles - I logged a ticket in the app, got someone out within a week and replaced it in 20 mins - was a lovely guy too, very chatty and happy to answer a few other questions I had. Brilliant service for the one time I needed it. Used a supercharger in Cork - just plugged in a didn't need to setup anything, register anything....just plugged in, walked away and it was nearly charged in 20-30 mins. Was a little pricey (€26) but I knew it would be something like that and I hardly use SC anyway.

    My two points

    1. In our first couple of weeks I was using the AP with the family in the car and we were going prob about 10k on a straight road, clearly marked and it all of a sudden it steered to the left to take a slip road. I grabbed the wheel quick enough but really scared us all and has probably affected my confidence in using AP a lot now - just don't have the confidence in it, especially on motorways which is a shame.
    2. I have an android phone (OnePlus 9) and I find that just walking up to the car with the phone in my back pocket doesn't work - my phone needs to be unlocked first and then it'll open. Not sure if this is the same for other Android phones or iPhones but its a bit of a pain...especially when I have my arms full, I might as well have a car key in that case.

Hope everyone else is having as good an experience as I have been

Good to see a happy owner, I am another one🙂

I am also reluctant to use AP now when on N roads, too many false turns, particularly into right turn lanes. Can give quite a fright, though fairly used to it now, but not a great experience for passengers. However happy enough when on Motorways which are not that common for me.

Cannot answer your phone problem. My older iPhone works perfectly, sounds something to do with your always on settings..

Quite frosty this morning so was worried a bit about frozen door handles, mirrors, etc. Nothing too bad in the end. The door handles required a bit of coaxing to come out of their homes but made it in the end. One of the mirrors took some persuasion too. Overall though they'd be the same issue with any other car. A few things I learned which may help others here:

    • In the app now there's a quick action for unlatching the driver door so you don't need to loosen the handle to get it to open.
    • I've turned off the auto folding of mirrors now for the season so they won't need to unfold in the morning time - I was hoping they could be left unfolded at home and fold everywhere else but looks like you can only do the opposite i.e. by default unfolded and then fold at certain locations.
    • Noticed that at least one of the windows would roll all the way up and then down a tiny bit when the door was closed. Thought it was a calibration issue but have since read that this is by design when the temperatures get cold so it won't damage the window when you open/close the door and the window mechanism is frozen.
    • I'm sure we all know this but defrosting the car from the app is such a luxury!

My boot was frozen last night (where I stash the XMas chocs), had to manually pull it open

Yea love the preheating but cost me about 5% battery this morning! Worth it.

If your car is plugged in it will take power from the charge point, save you some Winter range

Ah yea wasn’t an issue today as not going too far

It was -5 this morning and -1 in the car, the defrost worked a treat in no time, the Model 3 will run the rear motor to generate heat for the heat pump and quicken cabin preheat, rather nifty way of doing it so don't be worried if loud hums coming from the car when heating it up from really cold outside temps

For the unlatching the door from the app where the handle may be frozen, I used it for the first time today (-3 outside) and the operation failed - it seemed to half open the door. I'll be keeping an eye on it in the future.

Max Defrost is worth the battery usage for me - 5-10 mins and the car was good to go. 🙂

The phone issues above always seem to be there on android for some reason.

My issue here is that most pre-heating I’d do would be after the night rate ends (currently 8am), so I prefer to use the battery to heat the car…… but of course if charging to 100% and if I need all the range I can get then I’d happily use the day rate from the grid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,385 ✭✭✭MightyMunster

Wonder if there's a setting in the app that's causing this? I have a one plus 6T and don't have this issue.

On the AP I have had that issue before on slip roads, depends on the lines on the road. Always keep hands on wheel and be ready for a disengagement as you approach an exit. Only happens at the odd location so on your normal routes you'll know if they're ok or not.

Or else always be overtaking and you'll never have the issue 😁

Agreed, that's why I put the Zappi to STOP mode before pre-heating in day rates

Lads where on the app is the door open setting?

    I must be blind.

Also have a problem on Android. Every single time I get in the car I have to connect the phone to the car manually on the screen. Pain in the arse.
