If Russia invaded us in the morning, who would come to our aid?

... or would anyone? My opinion is no one would. There would be plenty of strong words and maybe weapons supplies but that would be it. Thoughts?

From what we have seen in Ukraine our defence forces and a few farmers would be more than enough to handle them.

It's a thought experiment. I think it's unlikely too but then again the Ukraine war is unlikely. As is banning 52 Irish politicians by the Kremlin.

It would be the end of the world I’m sure. While we aren’t in NATO, do you really think NATO would want a Russian puppet in Western Europe? We are part of the EU as well so not entirely neutral when it comes down to it.

Because our main strategic interest is as a base from which to attack the UK. So there is at least a good chance the UK would want to dislodge them there first instead of waiting to be attacked.

The UK already has a presence in Ireland, an important factor to consider, so it would be default become an invasion of the UK too. In which case ... You can't ignore the geopolitical realities that caused this scenario though: I daresay if conditions became that strained Russia launched an invasion on the Republic, presumably NATO and Russia were already at war at this stage and Ireland an exposed rump into the UK.

Maybe more likely in that apocalyptic scenario the UK and Ireland already arranged a defence pact, perhaps including a restoration of "Treaty Port" arrangements and the usage of Irish infrastructure. Maybe the UK marched into Ireland to shore up that rump. IIRC Churchill debates doing this in ww2, though could be misremembering; a lot was discussed back then

Russia hasn't the means to supply its army on its own borders never mind in Ireland.

There are 5 NATO carriers at sea in the European theater at the moment. Russia and China have none.

Ireland is irrelevant.

Russia have no reason to invade us. It's akin to worrying that America might have invaded us next after they were done with Iraq, or Afghanistan.

The notion that a country which invades another "must be stopped or they'll come for us next" is fantasist nonsense. People who point to Hitler as "proof" are basically telling you their knowledge of world history starts and ends with WWII.

What evidence? The evidence all points to that they wouldn't. They could flatten out cities with missiles and drone strikes and have strongly worded statements in response.

That's not the point of this thread though. It's a what if thread. It's why Finland and Sweden are scrambling to join NATO. They are under the very real threat of attack from Russia. Would the West do any more than they did for Ukraine if Russia attacked Finland - if people insist on being literal. This is a real possibility.

Putin's stated goal is to recreate the former Soviet Union with Eastern European countries as vassal states. Ukraine is only the first domino.

I believe the UK would play a very strong part as we currently share the island with part of their terrain. They’d want to protect their own interests, and cooperation wouldn’t be short in coming under the worst circumstances.

TBH nobody should come and they would be right to let us burn because we are happy to sit on the fence and do nothing with this neutrality crap.
