Laptop won't boot

I have hp laptop with windows 10 it is stuck on repairing, can get into system restore but asking for password of which I don't remember, anyway round this

If you really don't remember the password, you'd probably need to reinstall over your own operating system, so you'd lose personal data.

Tried several old passwords, no joy, wanted to avoid wiping and starting again, not even sure how would do that being locked out.

Pull the hard drive and plug it into a different machine. Get your files then wipe it and start from scratch. Then copy files back.
