As a 'normal person' what do you think of Current Affairs/IMHO

    You know the types

The new twitter is going to beat the head of the lefties, Trump is a god, Justin Trudeau and Jacinda Ardern are fascists and the like.

To be fair it's not all like that and can be a source of sensible information at times.

a'righy then ; think it'd be fine meself, if the invidious WUMs were sanctioned,, So long as they be woke, they get away with allsorts,,

eg Poster 1: "There's too many Ukrainians coming over here (Ireland) "

    Poster WUM : "Racist!"

how that can be "racist" is beyond me - aint even xenophobic imo

Thats part of a much wider internet phenomenon of enforcing groupthink

I think it's mainly worthless and about what you would expect from an anonymous message board.

But, I'm happy enough to leave them to it.

It is what it is, and that's a shame. But nobody forces me to look at it, so I don't give it a lot of thought. Quarantining the shite keeps After Hours cleaner than it might otherwise be.

An excellent creation but it’s not really doing the job it was designed for anymore. If the CA “types”, the angry middled aged cranks, could be kept distracted over there it would be great.

What's happening is they are getting “sanctioned” for their odious opinions over there and then wandering into more normal forums and doing their usual dumps on refugees, trans people, people of colour, women (particularly successful ones), RTÉ among others. They are usually quite easy to spot as they’ll have the prison bars over their avatar, never a good look.

I, personally, believe that with stricter moderation in AH, and other normal forums, and a much lighter “touch” moderator in CA things would be a lot better on the site, especially for more normal users.

Let the angry little weirdos, oddballs and malcontents have their little “dung heap” to wallow in.

And it's repeated ad nauseum to boot. God be with the days when it was merely a "cess pool".

It's a disaster. It is, on the face of it, the main place on the site to discuss current affairs. It's not some overflow for castoffs from other fora.

But it is horrendously under-moderated, and posters get away with far much for far far too long before they get banned.

Stricter moderation, yeah. Something should be done about all those sock puppet accounts eh dude?

Admin Beasty managed to remove the “Big 10” in the McMurphy Affair. That was one, heavily, pro-Sinn Fein user using multiple accounts to attack the government and defend SF.

Since then a few dormant accounts, suddenly, activated and others setup to fill the void but it was still Trojan work on the part of the mods here to uncover what was going on.

Thats why it was created iirc. To store the waste in one place.

Well one particular "dude" has been giving them a run for their money in the sock puppet account stakes.

You mean other people's opinions? Yes it can be difficult for some to stomach that others have a view unlike their own.

Mod - I want to let this thread run but if it's just going to turn into a list of grievances between posters, or people having a go at mods, then that's not going to end well.

Can we please stick to discussing the CA forum? This should possibly be in thd feedback forum but it can stay here for now

A place for cast offs that shouldn't be allowed to interact with other people is exactly what it is though, and by design. It was created several years to late to be that. The tenor of discussion had already changed on AH by the time it was created. Personally I don't the idea of quarantining a community actually works though. If a section of clowns are allowed to exist on a site they will naturally bleed over to the rest of it.

Why would anyone want to attack this government?? Don’t get it myself

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,952 ✭✭✭✭EmmetSpiceland

I get what you mean, aitmDoF, but, for me, it’s about keeping all the nasty stuff like the anti-Ukrainian, anti-immigrant, anti-trans, racism, misogyny and all the stuff that, I would think, doesn't “belong” in AH over in another place.

If these things must be discussed then, again, for me, it should be done in CA and not somewhere designed for more of a laugh.

This thread is like Cluedo, but without the candlestick.

CA/IMHO seems to be largely WUMs replying to WUMs. The odd time something of value shines though.

There very little anti any of the stuff you said. It’s mostly anti governmental stupidity that comes across in those threads. The racism, anti this that and the other accusations are just thrown out to stifle criticism of government policy.

I dip in and out of certain threads over there and the odd ones I follow and maybe contribute to. More and more I adopt a shrug my shoulders attitude when reading a post that I don't agree with. Opposing opinions rarely bother me.

Racism and misogyny can be used to describe some people in very broad strokes I feel. There is no taking in to account the complexity of the view so instead it's "you say we can't accommodate more Ukrainian people then you are racist" or "if you don't believe that men should be extra mindful of walking behind a woman at night you are a misogynist".

And Emmet I find it very hard to believe that you are the person you portray yourself to be on here. Now and then I feel as though I've caught glimpses of the real you, the one who doesn't use quotation marks or throws digs at others or views certain forums and users with contempt.

    Who are you really?

The Current Affairs / IMHO forum works perfectly well, as far as I'm concerned.

Insightful analysis of many subjects that matter in the here and now. For sure, there'll always be some problem users - but that exists on any forum, at any time.

The quality of the posts is generally quite high, most of which is backed up, and most attempts made at posts are done in good faith.

Not sure what more you could ask for, really.

There's a hell of a lot of people on here who really can't handle someone having a differing opinion. It's a very bad reflection on them as a person.
