True. Thankfully the Gardai caught him red handed before he raped her. However his intent was obvious. He filled her full of drink, was caught on CCTV carrying her to where he was caught after stripping her clothing from the waist down.

    Excellent work by the gardai.

The fact is that Fr. Sheehy was right but his bedside manner leaves a lot to be desired. His bishop was wrong in apologizing. Fr. Sheehy was preaching the doctrine of the Catholic Church and Cannon Law as it stands today, which is his duty as a priest. He was playing by the rules of his church of which he is a senior member. We may not agree with him but as they say 'them the rules'

If playing soccer for example it is not allowed to pick up the ball and throw in the net or to your teammate, it's against the rules of the game. If you break the rules FIFA or FAI will not apologize on your behalf. If you don't agree with the rules find another sport...in other words if you don't agree with the teachings of the Catholic Church find another religion.

One would have to respect Fr. Sheehy for sticking with his principles and that of his church, although one may disagree with him. It's the hypocrites who never attend church except to get married, to baptize their children, for their children's first communion & confirmation that are unbearable and are the loudest when it comes to bad mouthing the church, priests etc. etc. So called a la crate christian ! I can understand and respect both atheists & believers be it Muslim, Hindu, Christian or other but these shower of hypocrites are unbearable.

You don’t seem to know what “ whatabouttery” means

the reply was to a post about the Sligo murders , whatabouttery is where an unrelated instance is presented

Your post has a similar relationship with the truth as your namesake's. Literally nobody has said that. Are we supposed to have daily "isn't murder awful" posts or something?

I grew up in an Ireland dominated by not only priest's who thought like this fool but a substantial number of ordinary folks also. Back then they could cause a lot of pain with the twisted logic the tried ramming down our throats. Thankfully we have moved on. I suggest we ignore his ilk, they are fading away quickly and soon will be forgotten by a more modern inclusive Ireland. His last gasps of ignorance should not be given air time in this day and age nor more that we give to witchcraft or any other mythical cult. Believe in whatever you like Fr Sheehy but do take your beliefs with you to your grave. Catholicism is a failed religion and will never again influence the citizens of our country at government level.

I have been involved in a local school and its move away from Catholic Ethos. The local catholic parish council came to the school with their approval, the board of management approved it and the parents blocked it. And the funny thing was, it was the Muslim and other christian church parents that blocked it ...So...go figure!!

The problem is his support of a convicted sex offender, his obvious distaste for the victim and how it contrasts with his admonishments to his flock from the pulpit.

A lot of people are not ok with that Monsieur.

Are you having a laugh! Print off that post of yours and show it to any of the congregation coming out of mass on Sunday and they will look at you as if you had two heads! If you think that's what Catholics understand never mind believe then you really are not in tune with reality.

Move on? There are still bishops in office who covered up for abusers. Religious orders still owe vast sums in unpaid compensation. And still hundreds of little corpses in a cesspit in Tuam - and probably many other places too.

You'd love to "move on" all right.

RCC is only the safest place for a child to be now because no parent in their right mind would leave a child alone with a priest

The media Spent a week preaching about how awful Irish men are after the Tullamore school teacher was murdered , his court case not having taken place didn’t stop them

Your statement was a broad one, about what medical treatments should or shouldn't be given to trans children in general. Maybe you'd like to edit your earlier post to clarify that you're not pontificating about other people's children.

One swallow doesn't make a summer. The Church maintains control over 95% of schools, maintains the ethos of those schools, interviews for staff based on their faith, and refuses to provide reasonable options for children of other religions and no religion.

I must try that tactic the next time AIB come looking for their credit card to be paid. 'No money would be enough' for you, so I'm only going to give you less then half.

The media has amplified this one sermon into a nationwide discussion and people on the internet, of whatever views, are reacting.

That's not true about schools at all. The RCC Is actively blocking divestment. Meanwhile they are doubling down by introducing stuff like the so-called "Flourish" programme which is in place of proper, fact-based relationships and sex education. Children deserve better than to be fed myths and lies in school every day, dressed up as truth.

I would agree with this. I hope he continues down this route as well.

Mass attendees should be told to hand over their daughters if there is a rabble outside attempting to "know" a man. Also, if children mock a bald man it is perfectly acceptable, moral even, for him to get a bear to kill them. You can't pick and choose which bits of the bible are to your taste.

That's a pretty accurate post in fairness to you. The only reservation I have is that you as a grown-up appear to believe in something, a creator, when there is not a scintilla of evidence to support that belief. Plenty of hearsay, plenty of apparitions, signs, dreams etc from thousands of years ago but no actual evidence. In fact the evidence shows a completely different explanation for our existence. Anyway fr sean should be an interesting guest on the late late tonight and will probably wipe the floor with tubs who is only comfortable interviewing/ fawning over non controversial guests like wee Daniel and his missus or Dermot Bannon types.

I find it surprising how many people are surprised when a priest makes these kind of statements.

This is what the Roman Catholic Church and it's true believers believe in, they think it is sinful to engage in homosexual behaviour just like they think contraception is wrong.

Why do people think that just because wider society has accepted those things that the old RCC has suddenly changed their views?

Are people equally as surprised if an imam calls for gays to be assaulted and punished and women to be segregated or if one of Tom Cruise's buddies comes out and says that by paying wads of cash for "auditing with tin cans and an emeter" one can free oneself from painful and debilitating mental images known as engrams.

Beliefs are often backward or nonsensical and often discriminatory or painful towards others.

What I do find offensive about this gent is what he said and did in that rape case in Listowel and that is the thing that concerns much much more.

He appears to be the last person that should be offering moral guidelines to anyone.

I hadn't connected the dots until I spotted this thread today.

I am very surprised this clown is on the Late Late show. Or am I....I haven't watched it in over 10 years because of Tubs. I don't think I can break my promise not to watch it again while Tubs is in the hotseat but I hope the priest continues to make a fool of himself and exposes the rotten institution further.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

The church could back themselves here, and deny baptisms to children born out of wedlock, demand couples to attend Sunday Mass for a certain period of time before allowing them have a church wedding, but they don't want to shoot themselves in the foot and reduce the already dwindling numbers so they aren't going to do that.

I've a jewish friend who married a non-jewish lady. She had to attend synagogue every weekend for 2 years before being allowed to marry into the faith.

The catholic church knowingly marries couples who never show up to mass, apart from the odd christmas service. Nobody takes is seriously, and fair play to this priest for calling a spade a spade. If a few more were like him the a la carte mass goers for weddings, baptisms and confirmunions would disappear, leaving those who actually believe the practice the faith.

You would have to wonder who is doing the chasing here, Sheehy or the media. He sure has been popping up everywhere all week.

Hopefully the LLS won't be the typical softball nonsense. They should have someone of opposing views (who is also Catholic) on to debate his blockbuster homily.

and just who ARE the Church?

Its fine if it is just a bunch of men standing in empty churches.

It needs people for it to function. Ordinary believers. Those people are leaving in their droves.

Don't get me wrong. I am a spiritual person, however, I do not believe in the organisation of the Catholic Church and have not for a long long time.
