A dozen Johnson supporters have switched to Sunak this morning and only one to Mordaunt. Very unlikely she’ll get to 100. Many of the ERG members have already declared for Sunak as well

i actually like Mordaunt. Her background is normal and interesting and she represents the constituency where she grew up. But she’s not right for now. She’d be good during a peaceful stable time, economically and geopolitically, when some of her ideas could rise to the top

If she does get to 100 and gets on the ballot with the members, they'll vote her in. I don't qwhite know what it is, but...

It all comes down to perspective.

I mean, we could talk about Tony Blair and the illegal war in Iraq - which some estimate to have killed up to 1 million people.

That seems, to me at least, to contrast with Boris having a few drinks at his place of work during lockdown.

    See where I'm coming from?

So whilst I'm not saying Boris is perfect, you need to zoom out to see the bigger picture. Does Boris sometimes lie? Yes, but all politicians do that - on both sides of the house.

Is Tony Blair attempting to be re-elected leader of the Labour party? Then I fail to see the relevance of your post.

Shouldn't you be claiming to have always said Rishi was the man for the job by now?

Rishi will be a good PM, to steady the ship.

He'll effectively act as an Asian Tony Blair; a centrist kind of approach that will differ little from Labour (at least on the big issues).

But he wasn't my first preference, as I said before, I don't think it was wise for the CP to depose Boris when they did.

Standard whataboutery. Anyone born in the last year of New Labour is over two thirds of the way towards being of age. They still trot this out.

Not sure what an "Asian Tony Blair" is other than being obsessed with his ethnicity.

    Paragraph 3 is just lies.

Assuming this is a coronation of Sunak now, the party should do everything they can to ensure he has as close to 357 letters backing him as possible

It would be a very bad look if he had less than half of the party supporting him from day 1

They just can't help but get their little racist digs in.

So, who would make ATB's cabinet? African Kenneth Clarke maybe? South American Peter Mandelson and a Scottish Gordon Brown?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,395 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Why? I'd have thought the Tory membership will also be lobbying MPs so as to allow for their vote. It's a secret ballot and she has the trump card in that she's a True Blue Brit.

    It's a figure of speech.

This will be the first PM from Asian stock. That's a good thing, no matter which side of the spectrum you sit.

But in terms of policy and approach, I think its safe to say that it will be a version of Tony Blair and less of the ERG.

    These people are f*cking insane:

Boris Johnson ally Jacob Rees-Mogg has branded Rishi Sunak a ‘socialist’ and refused to serve in his cabinet should he become PM.

The Brexit-backing Conservative MP hit out at the former chancellor’s “disloyalty” to the Prime Minister after he resigned last Tuesday.

This comes after Rees-Mogg appeared to brand Sunak a socialist for high taxes during his time in charge of the government’s pursestrings.

Nobody voted for this farce. We should be able to have an election. Every day, they get less and less democratic.

Nah, it's yet another disgusting racist comment from you.

Rather than Sunak being a man, an MP or PM in his own right, he's just an Asian equivalent of someone else.

I'm not remotely surprised to be honest. Utterly vile comment.

I prefer "dishy Rishi" over "Asian tony Blair" but that's neither here nor there.

Could have said "A Tory Tony Blair" or just "A Tony Blair type character" , but went with "Asian Tony Blair"

Him being Asian is utterly irrelevant to the context of the post , but somehow it gets added to the mix .

    Why is that I wonder?

Mogg is not one bit insane he just doesn't give a sht what he says.

Its all just a laugh for him.

No first of all its not a figure of speech, you see we all know enough about you that you consider the title of "Tony Blair" as an insult therefore any name you apply with it is also meant to be a petty addon and another insult. You chose Asian because it is some bigoted dog whistle racism that's is par for the course with you.

I'm sure the Party membership are gagging for a chance to vote again , but that doesn't mean that the Parliamentary party want to let them.

Neither Sunak or Mordaunt are going to be capable of winning the next General Election but Sunak probably offers the better chance of limiting the damage done.

As I said previously , current polling levels would have the Tories losing 250+ seats at the next election , Sunak potentially offers a path to limiting those losses to under a 100. Mordaunt does not , simple as that.

Those MP's care more about their jobs than they do about the Tory party membership so they will do everything that they can to ensure that there is no vote which risks more of them losing their jobs.

You don't think it's significant the UK is about to appoint its first PM with Asian heritage?

I do. I think it's significant and a step in the right direction.

The Torys have elected 3 women and now 1 PM from Asian stock. Far more diverse than what other parties have managed to achieve.

It's not that Labour are against having a woman leader, the majority are also not against a Hindu leading either.

It's just it's activists and their modern interpretation of the left is middle class metropolitans.

It's the same reason that someone from Rochdale or an ex miner would never be picked.

It's a class and values divide.

The issue here is that Sunak won't be able to control his party and legislate. It's almost a bag of cats now. The Johnsonites hate him and the libertarians won't be happy about their grubby little tax handout being thwarted. The one nation group barely exist but they could still cause trouble. Worst of all, many MPs have no incentive to toe the line because they know they're on course to lose their seats.

Mogg is the type of shitbag that would have the workhouses back and children up chimneys if he had his way. An absolutely loathsome animal. If Sunak becoming PM sees the end of him, then that alone would be a good result.

    Apologies if you've seen this:

If not, do watch. Mogg is a vile creature masquerading as a comedy act.

That may be, but in the context of your post about how he might attempt to emulate the centrist approach of Tony Blair the use of the phrase "Asian Tony Blair" is utterly unnecessary and not remotely relevant to the point you were trying to make.

His ethnicity has no bearing on what political approach he might choose to use to herd the cats in the Tory party , so why call it out?

So you're attacking someone on the basis that him as a 12 year old saying he likes money and doesn't want to get married?

That's a bizarre justification to hate someone.

Sunak is the wealthiest man to ever sit in the House of Commons. Hardly representative of Asian people in the UK as a whole.

Funny how the right wing types happily play the race card when it suits them.
