    Our department policy is 3 days wfh. We had to go through a consultation process with line managers individually (subject to line manager bias on wfh). The end result is a middle of the road solution for our business unit for 3 days office 2 wfh. Which i will take happily, given the results of the survey.

    The answers from the survey show that this is really middle of the road in terms of what is being implemented across departments. I don't see how some of those hardline departments are going to retain staff in the long run unless they change their stance.

    I had my first day in the office since March 2020 yesterday. Place was decimated only about 10% of the staff in attendance. Monday is not a popular day in our place. We were scattered all over the building also which some of the support staff have expressed displeasure over, however the hot desking arrangements still have to come into force.

    Tuesday is the busiest day with the most attendance in my workplace. Guess there is nothing better to do on a Tuesday! 😉

    Friday is so quiet they are thinking of closing the buildings on Fridays to conserve energy.

    Won't happen as people have right to a workplace. There's a large chunk of organisations not applying for hybrid working.

    It is being actively discussed.

    My department has more than one office building and we have converted to hotdesks with a desk booking system.

    They could easily close two or three of the buildings on any given day and leave one available for those who want a desk.

    Suppose it could work for Depts who hotdesk. Wasn't aware this was happening in the CS tbh!

    Yes, we are 100% hotdesks now, no assigned desks.

    People have a right to a workplace? Odd phrasing, but if an employer wants to maximise efficiency, they're perfectly within their rights to say "X building is closed on a Friday, if you want to work from the office on a Friday, you need to go to Y building."

    There isn't a large chunk of organisations in the public service that are not providing blended working. Almost everywhere, with the exception of some local authorities, is offering a minimum of one day a week WFH, with most places offering at least 2 or 3 days WFH. There are some exceptions, where the job doesn't easily allow for WFH.

    Yes, but there is a large chunk within those organisations not applying for hybrid work (apart from the chunks of some Depts who are not being offered WFH for operational reasons).

    That's where we'll be heading for those availing of hybrid working, I suspect.

    It will allow the OPW to cut costs.

    Ok, my experience is different, then - nearly 100% opting for blended work where it's been available.

    two people on my floor opted out of blended work, but certianly the minority. Theres been talk of closing floors on quiet days but the building will certainly have to remian open

    The government's ''Blended Working Policy Framework for Civil Service Organisations'' says that ''Blended workers will generally have no automatic right to a dedicated workstation or single occupancy office in their employer’s work premises but will have a shared work space available to them when required to attend''. Part of longer term planning to downsize physical footprints where possible I'd imagine.

    Sure, but those who opted out of blended working won’t be subject to the same hot desk policy so it’s unlikely any offices (in Dublin anyway) will close for a day

    Departments getting rid of buildings will happen as soon as their leases are up IMO

    Not the case in my dept, if you opt out of blended working you still participate in hotdesking and have to book your desk everyday, opting out also doesn't entitle you to an office these must also be booked as long as you have the permissins to do so

    In my Dept you don't opt out of hybrid, you opt in. If you don't opt in you are 100% in office.

    Interesting that some Depts are doing the reverse.

    There's so much evidence that hotdesking is horribly inefficient. Amazing some Depts are adopting it so readily. You'll note your POs and A/Secs won't be hotdesking!

    To be fair my PO is at the mercy of the desk booking system also, whilst he will get what was once his office most times, a couple times a month it will be booked and he'd be elsewhere on the floor


    Hot desking personally doesn't bother me, as long as everyone plays nice and arent disgusting human beings, no evidence of that so far. I find it encourages less printing when people don't have a permanent desk to store print outs they might never read and could have read onscreen anyway.

    The civil service guidance very much considers hybrid an opt in model, you have to formally apply for it.

    Hot desking could lead to some issues, it's known to give rise to stress in some individuals, especially those who get very attached to their workspace or need / want to sit beside a window, etc.

    This will come across harsh, but no harm in those people being given a shake up every now and then

    I worked a woman, not in the Public Sector, who had about 10 pairs of shoes at her desk. Fine if in a personal office but this was open plan

    In reality most hot desk situations lead to the same people using the same desks they’ve always had. Not universal, but most of the time

    Would agree with you in that some people get very possessive about their work space. I've seen worse in terms of people blocking off walkways near their station to put in a wardrobe to hand their office clothes for the week. We've all seen those people with piles and piles of files going back years, and even decades.

    But hot desking arrangements require some thought and planning to avoid conflict, and I don't get the impression that this thought and planning has been properly undertaken.

    If people are coming to the office to collaborate and build working relationships, then they'll need collaboration spaces which allow for that. They'll need places to put their stuff, places where they can get 5 mins of peace to concentrate or take a personal phone call. There also needs to be a lot more thorough cleaning of office equipment if it's going to be shared by multiple people.

    We have installed lockers for staff, so that when they book their desk for the days they are in the office, they automatically have a locker assigned for those days as well, where they can leave personal items, including their work laptop overnight if they are working a few days in a row.

    Former single occupancy offices allow for those collaboration spaces and/or privacy for zoom meetings, or calls where needed. Not denying its definitely an adjustment, even more so for those who were used to having their own assigned single occupancy offices pre-covid, but the transition is going really well so far and feedback from staff is good.

    It's yours for the days you are in the office.

    We don't have room for individually assigned permanent lockers for hundreds of staff members.

    In my dept we hot-desk but just with the alternate person on my floor on the opposite days so my day is the start of the week and I have that desk every week, I have a little drawer with a key at my desk and the other person has the desk on the days they are in and has a desk underneath too. Same desk everytime I go in! Suits me to be honest. We just make sure to wipe everything down when we come in and when we leave.
