What is the purpose of the bidirectional meter e.g. Emlite meter, installed with grid-tie hybrid systems? I know it measures import & export but what happens to the metered data? Just curious is all.

Its how the inverter knows when to charge/discharge. It talks to the inverter over a serial connection.

Others just have a CT wired into them (eg sofar)

cheers, i presume it's a legal requirement to have this metering separate from the inverter, or is it just a practical thing so that if the inverter breaks or is replaced etc etc...

It is just the way it works.

There is a Seai requirement for a separate meter maybe that's what your looking at and I got them mixed up.
