Oh look, leaving aside his marriage to Diana, in the 80's the tabloids tore him apart as a tree-hugger- bet they're feeling a right bunch of Charlies today - i believe that in the past, he was a dork (and I don't mean by appearance as that's just mean), a quack, a bit of a cad and bounder, a playboy and out of touch and out of date- but I think today, in some really querky way, he fitted the role of King of England- he's certainly not perfect, and indeed, who wants to be compared to QE2, but I think for the foreseeable future, "he'll do"- until William and Kate take hold.

An entire thread,of a country losing its marbles

I get she means alot to some people, but it's simply North Korean levels of absurd....bowled into stratosphere by corporate virtue signalling

Weird to point any rational person would find it disconsorting

During the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916, some Republican leaders, including Pearse and Joseph Plunkett, contemplated giving the throne of an independent Ireland to Prince Joachim of Prussia.

indeed I did mention that earlier in this thread too.

And that's why the British public, in the early 90's got pizzed off with the Royal family and all of their moaning - it woke them up to the fact that they were at risk of becoming redundant and it's good that happened as they were held to account - Diana's death was another time where the public made their mark, albeit it became all very embarrassing for everyone involved and i think the public would like to set that episode aside.

So yeah, tampon-gate- it really was a low point for Charles- phone recording underhandedly (not sure how illegal it was at that time) obtained by the tabloids - and then published- it has to be said- I thought it was unfair - you're entitled to a private life too even though you're so public- but it just shows what lack of respect people had at that point (including the public) after so many royal family gaffs. That's why the Queen endured- she was the reliable consistent thread in a less than perfect family- a very imperfect family actually.

Will the tabloids dish this up again in months to come? I dunno, I think as long as they get what they want, they'll refrain - but doesn't stop you or me talking about it or posting references to it etc- Ya REALLY don't want your future King to profess to wanting to be a tampon- but look, it happened. Can't go back- it is what it is.

For those not around in the 80's especially, where the Queens sons and daughter were reaching their early and established adulthood, this is essentially how they were portrayed in the media and in fairness, how most people thought of them- they were still far more remote and inaccessible than they were today so media portrayal played a major part, far more than maybe today, where people tend to make their own mind up based on a range of factors, but certainly the ability for form opinions via social media.

Charles: Outdated, old-fashioned, years beyond his age, lucky lucky bastard getting Diana, upstaged by Diana consistently, adrift...

Anne: Aloof, toffy nosed, horsey set, totally irrelevant to modern day but somewhat respected because of her extreme assertiveness - she has emerged as a photocopy of her mother in the 21st century and probably one of the most popular royals today

Andrew: Early 80's and falkland war, a hero- but quickly reduced to a clown- not much has changed since and has got a whole lot worse obviously

Edward- Gay and a wimp - a terrible time for him and completely unfair - history will treat him far better than it did in the 80s- his love of theatre and acting and his resignation from an Army (SAS I can't remember without googling it?) course after a few weeks, placed him as a "puff" . As I say, must have been "ghastly" as they say in the firm- I'd say the journalists who did those articles might be somewhat repentant today- at least I hope so. His subsequent marriage to Sofie, despite an episode of selling access to the RF, has helped him become a decent working royal, albeit with a relative low profile, and his wife outshines him

So yeah, the Queens children never inspired the public that the Royal family was worth keeping- it might help the younger ones here appreciate just how much the British public have lost today- those over 50 would likely have held similar views to those documented above, and some at least, probably hold those same views, today.

    Reminds me of this joke

PM Boris was visiting a Glasgow primary school and the class was in the middle of a discussion about words and their meanings.

The teacher asked Boris if he would like to lead the discussion on the word 'Tragedy'.

So the the prime minister asked the class if they could think of an example of a tragedy.

A little boy stood up and said, 'If my best friend is playing in the field and a tractor runs over him and kills him, that would be a tragedy.'

'Incorrect,' said Boris, 'That would merely be an accident.'

A little girl stood up and said 'If a school bus carrying thirty children drove over a cliff, killing everybody inside, that would be

    a tragedy.'

'I'm afraid not', said Boris, 'That's what we would call a great loss'.

The room went silent. No other kid volunteered. Boris searched the room.

'Isn't there someone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?'

Finally, little Johnny raised his hand from the back of the class and said, 'If a plane carrying you and all the Tory M.P.s was hit by a missile and blown to smithereens, that would be a tragedy.'

'Fantastic!' exclaimed Boris, 'And can you tell me why that would be a tragedy?'

'Well,' said little Johnny, 'It has to be a tragedy, because it certainly wouldn't be a great loss, and it probably wouldn't be a **** accident either'

So, it's taken less than 36 hours post her death for this to descend into a farce, with the OTT coverage, nauseating corporate messaging, hagiography and beatification.

The UK is not quite 1997 levels of losing the run of itself, but it's not far off it.

Please take a breath before posting in anger or you may be repenting at leisure!

What did you expect. Couple news bulletins and then onto the weather?

She was their figurehead for the the past 70 years. Most recognisable face on earth for decades. A global face. To many many Britons, the crown is their actual identity!

It’s not at all OTT coverage. It’s been in the planning years.

Not since Jesus was crucified at Golgotha over 2000 years ago has a person so dedicated their life to the service and betterment of others.

He only served a paltry 12 years in the public, not 70,yet is remembered still.

    it’s terrible.

I mean it’s not like the UK has is going through an event that only happens once every few generations, like a Garth Brooks concert.

Pathetic. She hoarded a mountain of wealth while foodbank usages explodes. Christians love to preach but at the end of the day, it's about exploting the rules to make as much money as possible. Nothing else.

She's vetoed laws she didn't like for personal gain, used taxpayer cash to protect her paedophile son, owns multiple palaces and lives at the taxpayers' expense. Looks like a life of abject selfishness to me.

Nope. "Has helped" is a bit vague. Show me an analysis that considers her vast, vast assets and handouts and pits that against her alleged contributions and we'll see.

Interesting fact: Queen Margarethe II of Denmark is now the only living Queen in existence. All the other monarchies of the world have Kings or male equivalents.

She’s also now the longest serving living Monarch in Europe. And the popularity for the Danish monarchy sits around 82%

It will be interesting to see how Charles approaches his reign. 15-20 years, whilst nowhere near the longevity of his mothers reign, is still a decent amount of time. He’s no ‘placeholder’.

That’s just bash the rich type bullshit.

because she has a couple of estates and has a few horses she should have given it all away and lived in a two up two down, is that what you’re saying?

Fair question, I would ask the same to everyone in this thread getting so worked up about it all.

Im English and I feel it’s a big moment but I’m not losing sleep over it, just a big change and people will move on quickly.

I actually think people at home will move on quicker than plenty of people here, she’s dead lads, it does not impact on your life in any meaningful way.

Turn off the tv and let it go, nice day out there.
