I would suggest there is a major tone of surprise including one poster saying he's never seen anything outlining what would happen to football should this happen.

It seems a lot of people aren't clued in to how important the monarchy is to the people in the UK. I also find the outrage at the calling off from Irish people about sport in a foreign nation being called off absolutely bizarre. The whole pageantry about the monarchy is also bizarre but it's been like that since time immemorial.

Have a look at twitter. There are plenty of high profile British people saying that sport should continue with black armbands, flags at half mast and minutes silences. Just as they were recommended to do by their government.

There's also plenty of outrage from British fans. I mean, sport didn't stop in the 1950s when her father died and the monarchy was far more popular than it is today.

It's quite bizarre really. If they wanted to pay tribute to this Queen, then cancelling everything to sit at home moping is like the opposite of everything she stood for. Even two days before she died she insisted on doing her job and getting on with things.

I mean for what its worth, the football wasn't called off when the last monarch died, so its nowhere near the sure thing you've made it out to be. You seem more surprised that one poster hasn't been reading up on the plans for when the queen dies.

Its a ridiculous situation, there's no issue with anyone of any nationality calling it that.

pathetic that the games are off this weekend. performative grief.

Though at least we won;t have to hear commentators speak rubbish about how difficult it must be for the players to be playing after hearing such horrible news.

The games should have been played.

People are still expected to go to work. Pubs are still open. Retaurants are still open. Cinemas are still open. But sporting events? Can't be having them! FFS.

Are the PL going to refund fans for costs incurred, because they simply decided to postpone the games when they absolutely could have gone ahead?

If they want the weekend games off why not move them to Monday night. The teams that aren't on the champions league could play I'd imagine.

even Mondays game is off , is the rest of Britain closing down or is it just sport ?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,915 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

Just sport. And it seems, not even every sport.

The poster who said that lived in the UK for 10 years so he knows full well about the monarchy over there.

By the way none of my UK friends are happy that these games and other things are off and I bet a lot of UK people feel the same. So don't be painting all British people as some royalist hive mind.

Also if it was so obvious and everyone knew what was going to happen why did it take organisations so long to give an answer.

    Utterly embarrassing decision

So retail, pubs and the rest will be open - while Football closes indefintly. Surely it would have been more appropriate to mark her passing with a minute silence/applaud and armbands and remember her life , than 1 week to 2 week suspension of all football.

They could have toured this fella round the stadia.

    Untitled Image

But being serious people together in crowds of 40/50k giving a minutes silence is far better a remembrance than everyone sitting home bored.

and football is an absolute religion in England, they live for it.

Football wasn't as political back in the 1950's as it is now.

Never knew she loved football so much. Racing was her thing and it's back on Sunday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,164 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I'de say they would have been more worried about a terrace of possibly unionized working class abolitionists upsetting events back then.

Or do you mean the PM associated with having it on or off for the week.

Are the Corgi fights still going ahead ?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,915 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

So the cricket and the rugby in England go ahead tomorrow. Horse racing is back on Sunday. The Great North Run goes ahead as planned on Sunday. I've seen loads of musicians and comedians on twitter saying that their shows are still on this weekend.

But football has to virtue signal and cancel the whole weekends fixtures. And possibly next weekends too. The decision is becoming more and more ridiculous every time another sport announces that they're continuing to play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,791 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

Calling off matches like this is going to cause fixture congestion down the road. Players won't be too happy having to play say 3 games in 10 days for example although you could say they are well remunerated to do it. It's a farcical decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,784 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

I think this stupid decision is just reflecting what Britain (Mostly England) has become.

When the previous monarch died football carried on.

However since then, and particularly in the last last 20 years, England has become more nationalistic. George's Cross replaced Union Jack at international games.

The Premier League has been coaxed by this mentality to enshrining Remembrance Sunday into a whole football weekend resulting in poppy ceremonies at football stadiums carried out by uniformed soldiers whilst players , we all know who, whom are uncomfortable with it are chastised and abused for making a choice, which I always thought the war was fought far. Offering people freedom of choice.

Now they have buckled again and made a stupid over the top decision regardless what impact it has on people who had travel plans from all over the world and also regardless of what impact it has on the rest of the season.

They don't trust their own fans to behave themselves so they've scrapped the entire weekend.Even a tiny minority of agitators would be a PR disaster.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,915 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

BS. Two matches went ahead in England last night. At Old Trafford there was an impecibly observed minutes silence. At West Ham the crowd broke into their national anthem.

Even in Switzerland where the news broke during the first half of the Arsenal game, there was a minutes silence before the second half kicked off without any trouble.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,693 ✭✭✭AllGunsBlazing

BS? And yet every single game has been pulled while other sports continue on. Every, single, game.

They know full well that just one idiot could do an awful lot of damage at a very sensitive time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,841 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Why the 'BS' comment? I've no idea if the thought of some fans causing disruptions would be part of the decision making, but games being fine last night isn't really a sign of anything either way. It had literally only just happened, so a reaction from those at games last night would have been unlikely. Logically, if there were to be a reaction of some kind at some stage, it would likely come after there was a little time to plan something, or even just time to process it.

I do think it's probably more likely that the games are cancelled because of football's weird and ever-escalating jingoistic nationalistic tie-ins though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,164 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

    Damage how ?

Is the country gonna lose faith in the monarchy if some lad breaks the minutes silence. Are they worried grannies will choke themselves with their clutched pearls ?

Behave in what way? Most football fans probably don't give much thought to the monarchy.

What do you think these crazy fans are going to do exactly?

This over the top reaction is exactly why it's been pulled. What if, what if..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,693 ✭✭✭AllGunsBlazing

Did I say I agree with it? Just looking through the PR spiel being officially trotted out. They're afraid of something **** up.the image of their investment so they've decided to suffer through two blank weekends.

Easier ways to deal with it.

I'd be surprised if minutes silences weren't very well kept tbh. If that was a fear, then just applause.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,915 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

Football has been pulled because over the last number of years English football has disappeared up it's own metaphorical arse. It has to be seen to be doing the right thing. As I said in another post, it's nothing more than virtue signalling. They've even pulled all amateur and underage football in England FFS. What trouble do you suppose would have been caused at those levels?

Agreed. I would also much prefer the football went ahead. But a lot of wealthy individuals have taken a drastic, sledgehammer approach in order to protect the image of their billion dollar investment.
