Have to say I've had sick FOMO this weekend. Have a few friends down there who are keeping me semi-updated, seems like everyone is having a great time despite the rain and that the ground is holding up better than expected. Looking forward to reading the reviews on here in the coming days.

I hope it is still as good as ever - it would be a sad thought to think electric picnic has lost its magic.

Read an article just there which interviewed Melvin Benn at the festival today, he said there will be no capacity increases next year and that the festival site will stay much the same as this year as there were a lot of changes for this year.

CMAT amazing. She can do it all, that woman. Bone Machine in Spike Island at 10, folks. That's rough, overlapping with the Arctics. I'll chance it for a few songs. Love Tom and that could be pretty cool in such a small venue. Having a blast today, lots still to come.

They should move it to the bank Holiday in August.

We left today due to lack of interest in todays card. We missed 2019 so there has been a lot of changes for us. Amazed at terminus being finished by midnight while brutopolis and provedencia being underwhelming. Maybe i missed something. Found Fishtown a nice addition with easy access to main arena. Can't say I noticed a difference in crowds but I avoided main stage. Obviously the crowded camping area after the wristbands was an obvious giveaway though. Good buzz about the place.

For me, Thumper(thank you boardsies), Fontaines, King Kong Company and Sleaford Mods were highlights for me.

Disappointed to go to body and soul last night at 2 and find main stage finished. Was that always the way?

I've been to 13 picnics since our 1st one in 2006. It is very far removed from what John Reynolds brought us. Line up was very pop orientated and definitely not for me. Can't see myself returning unfortunately.

I did have 5 beautiful pints of Guinness upon my return to Dublin to round off a good weekend

No not at all. It used to be a great festival. They’ve totally sold out now though. No more chilled out vibes strolling around, no more loveabke hippies, kids kicking ball etc. now it’s totally overrun with 22 year olds in their thousands. I’ve no problems with the 22 year olds but now that’s all their is. It’s basically oxygen with the old picnic labels. Forrest fest in emo was a much nicer festival only 10 miles away

Cannot understand what exactly electric picnic is trying to be - Glastonbury? No. Major international acts? No. Alternative? Some perhaps? I just don’t get it.

    Oxygen with a conscious

Imo as soon as this sh1t starts then a festival is beginning it’s downward trajectory. What you’re describing is literally the things the festival was renowned for avoiding in its early or even mid years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,214 ✭✭✭wylo

Not sure if it needs an identity. It has managed to stay as Irelands largest music festival while keeping an eclectic mix of acts, not to mention successfully keeping out the scum.

    Snarky Snark Snark

Am back in pink moon bar for a final pint. Feet are knackered, went to monkeys but even with the small bit of rain I just wanted to sit down and have a bit of quiet at that stage. Weekend highlights were jack lukeman, wolf Alice, pixies, fontaines dc, king king conpany and the future goddess level act that is cmat.

Have thoughts on the weekend that are not positive and to be honest a lot of them are down to the feral nature of our youths. It’s no festival for old men.

will I buy tickets if I get the loyalty offer? Likely. Will I go? Tbd, would need to be something special I think.

Bootleg Beach Boys gave me a lovely lift this morning before the dreaded trek home. A morning boogie that soothed my soul. We've decided we're doing ATN and EP next year. We just love it so much.

Highlights were Little Simz, Annie Mac, King Kong Company, Pixies, TCM (but of course). Had great fun at Dec Pierce and various others that, at the moment, are hard to recall. I need sleep and tea and then more tea. My voice is gone since Friday.

I hear the complaints about crowds and queues but I had a ball as ever. Didn't go near the main stage or a bar (they can absolutely FO with those prices) and spent most of my time between Electric Arena, Rankins Wood, Salty Dog and Fish Town.

Enjoy the last night all and safe home.

Help me settle a bet. Did Jeff Mills play tonight or last night? He's listed as having headlined the Terminus stage tonight (Sunday) but a friend of a friend claims to have seen him last night?

Midset lull notwithstanding, I thought the Artics were brilliant. Night and day from last time they were here.

They we're excellent, he really embraces the front man scene that he hasn't before.

Alas, fcul all of the crowd knew their songs.

As a closing act, yes they are fab. Just actually not big enough (not enough repository).

This year was the death knell for me. I'm only 30 mins away, but I stopped camping in 2017. The crowd is now firmly 17-25 year old . The acts are obviously aimed that way (London grammar, Anne Marie, becky Hill, Megan. Coronas, detmot, picture dos, etc Alternatively focused imac owner)

Iike, enough is enough, we've already seen it at oxygen

This isn't anything new. The camp sites are intimidating, next stop Beirut. Completely overcrowded, heavily drug influenced

And judging by the red bull bars it's easy to understand, they are the biggest profit margin. They don't give a crap, they are quite happy to play €50 for 4 vodkas and red bull. Same crowd that will pay €17 for an 8" margarita pizza.

Well let them off at this stage, I say

The weekend probably cost me the guts of €1300, no messing, and I travelled over and back. Food I have to admit was good, but over priced. But by sunday6 night they were mostly sold out and /or not bothered. All over priced.

Next year, that money ain't going to FR

Touts lifted the roof off Jerry Fish tent to close my Picnic in a beautiful, raucous fashion. Khruangbin had the crowd eating out of their hand earlier. I was unsure about them beforehand, but they were superb. My highlight of the whole weekend. Safe journeys home folks.

They need to take 20k off the capacity and bump it up to over 21’s. Out in the carpark trying to get a bit of kip before we head off, feeling fairly meh about the whole festival tbh. Some great performances overall but probably the most underwhelming EP I’ve been to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,015 ✭✭✭Mucker46

Back in my bed. Khruangbin at Salty Dog closed my festival not as impressive as earlier but still a nice sound to finish to. Went to perfume genius instead of start of arctics. He can be hit or miss but very hit tonight. Watched some of Arctics after that and thought they were very flat. Was great to see so many of you over the weekend really added to it. Need to take some time to think about me and the picnic as some great and not so great things in the mix. Will probably annoy you by putting it up here at some stage. Travel safe all.

Thanks to everyone I meet over the weekend. I probably have another essay in me in response to the last page of posts. I'll see how I feel when I get back to a keyboard after tomorrow's cycle. Some of the content has changed having taken the long way around from Salty to Eco.

In short, despite some flaws this year compared to others, for me EP remains the best value festival in Ireland. On a rough count I've seen 60 acts for €170.

    The good

Had a great weekend pixies The scratch, thumper, king Kong Company and mango and mathman were the highlights for me

Mik Pyro was class on salty dog earlier too easily the most underrated Irish musician of his generation

Arctic's were the biggest surprise for me, my young Lad came over for them tonight and they were actually brilliant

Fontaine's on Friday just didn't do it for me can't really put my finger on it

Relaxed view on cans from family campsite was nice there were searches but more cause they had to than wanted to take anything from you

Crowd is young and I mostly avoided main stage bar today but I feel there is enough here to keep me for a few more editions

    The bad

Lack of security was very obvious I walked back all 3 nights to family camping without a wristband check

Loads of people accidentally ended up in family camping as a result and then had a long trek back

Food and beer prices were over the top but that's every concert/festival

Lack of signage considering all the recent changes was shite

reading these posts with interest. I must have gone to ten EPs beginning in 2004. I still get the FOMO but doubt I’ll go back with numbers as they are now. ATN and Body and Soul would suit us better.

That a large tent was rammed full for The 2 Johnnies is a damning indictment of the demographic the EP has gone for

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 786 ✭✭✭princemuzzy

I'm not a fan but to be fair that's a massive gaa following they have, that's been at the picnic for years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,702 ✭✭✭riddles

Only went for Sunday - the signage was kack. Thankfully managed to find fishtown in time for mick flannery. Why would people go to the EP and fishtown and then try to talk at the top of their voices when there’s a giant field available to have a chat?

the queues for food and drinks terrible- the whole place way over crowded. Got stuck in the gridlock leaving somehow got a taxi home before I p!ssed myself, I won’t go again been at most since 2004 as am only out the road.

I didn't go this year but I give the festival massive credit for the drug warning information they put out on social media, it may have saved lives.

Wouldn’t be so sure about your last point

load of dodgy characters around this year.

Both in the town itself and in the festival. More than I remember any other year.

I went for the day on Saturday and yes, it's changed a lot. And let's be honest, it's been a big commercial pig for a good while now but the increased capacity this year has really shone a light on it.

My single biggest problem with it (and this too goes back years at this point) is that it's not relaxing to just 'be' there. Yes, you can find little pockets dotted around the venue to sit down and just enjoy the vibe, but the days of lounging around outside the Electric Arena with beer in hand, half listening and half talking, are long, long gone. The sheer number of branded stages and food and drink stalls pumping out the same music really grates. Unless you're standing in a large music tent or in front of the main stage, then you're caught in some sort of sound clash.

I can live with the line up being mostly not to my taste any more (if I want three days of 'my music' I can get that in Europe for half the price while wearing sandles) and the gangs of 22 year olds that people are complaining about don't bother me either. I was young once, too.

But it's the scale and the sheer noise and heft of the thing that has changed it beyond all recognition. At the Salty Dog, or deep in the woods or in the Mindfields area etc., it's mostly the same festival, but in the main area it's simply a different animal now.

Overall, the festival has had a fantastic run over the years. Some of the best line ups, ever, were in Stradbally, Co. Laois, of all places, year after year. I've some fantastic memories (Kraftwerk and a mouthful of Mexican truffles being a particular highlight). But for me this is the end of the road. I want a different type of festival experience and unfortunately that means packing a bag and giving up the luxury of being able to come home to my own bed each night. For everyone that did enjoy it, keep on enjoying it!

I had a great day yesterday. The tent survived the rain on Saturday, so that was great. Packed it up and got it in the car and back to the music by the start of the Bootleg Beach Boys, and then the Dublin Gospel Choir, both great ways to kick off the Sunday. Highlights for me were Mick Flannery & Susan O'Neill, and Khruangbin, for me the gig of the weekend. I kind of bounced around in between and took in Tolu Makay, Kynsey, CMAT, Joy Crooks, James Vincent McMurrow and some Snow Patrol.

I had planned to go to Artic Monkeys, but Khruangbin were so good, I felt I wanted to end on a high and headed to the car.

Overall I had a wonderful weekend. My feet feel more pounded than usual, and I tried to manage around the rain as I was nursing a cold and didn't want to get soaked, so I missed some late night things. I'll do the overall review separately, lots of positives and negatives. I will be back again next year, assuming loyalty codes work out.

One standout for me was meeting so many Boardsies, some I knew from 2019 and others new. It really enhanced my Picnic getting to know you more, standing alongside you at some band we both happened to be there for. Especially glad to be able to have some of those good conversations that you can only have in person. You guys know who you are.
