Sand for lime mortar

    Hi,

    I'm repointing a red brick wall in lime mortar. I'm trying different sands for test batches (trying to tone down colour). I've been trying different washed play sands and am getting some wexford sand also.

    I was wondering can you use washed paving sand? or is it too gritty?

    You need to use well graded aggregate - this creates a good void structure which allows vapour transfer. Angular aggregate assists with this also. So a sharp, well graded sand will create the best moisture transfer capabilities. Don't use round play sand.

    Wexford beach sand 3mm down will produce a more attractive mortar than paving sand.

    Also learn how to mix it correctly if you don't know.
