Why can rotating wheels on an EV not generate electricity to constantly charge their battery?

People seem to be thinking hard about energy now due to the restrictions on russian gas and the rising electricity prices. Its slowly dawning how difficult it actually is to have energy on demand all the time. The wind hasn't been blowing for a month now which means most of our electricity is coming from conventional power stations and we havn't been building any new power stations , the chickens are coming home to roost

The short answer is because that will load the system and it will consume more energy. The long one below:

First of all, remember you cannot create energy. What one can do is to take one form of energy and change it into another form of energy. When speaking about conventional cars they use a chemical process - burning - to change the energy stored in the fuel into mechanical energy - movement. Unfortunately, a big portion of the energy is lost as an unwanted type of energy - heat - which is mostly wasted. By adding another conversion, this waste it increasing without a real benefit. What has been done and is still used today is to reduce the waste energy for example by replacing the mechanical breaking with elector-mechanical one. This converts the unwanted mechanical energy into electric one and store it for future use. The key word here is unwanted. Most of the time we want as much mechanical energy as possible to move the car.
