That City bench , nevermind Haaland, but Alvarez is some player to bring on - when I look at our strike force, a world apart.

What's the deal this season, it seems worse than its ever been and I though this was the year it was to be addressed...Newcastle basically lay down for the entire 2nd half, it's toxic to watch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,882 ✭✭✭✭CSF

They absolutely need to sort the rules out to have the clock stopped when the ball isn't play. Imagine how much better football would be to watch without that unnecessary time wasting. Obviously it makes sense for teams to do it in scenarios, so the only way around it is to take away the possibility. I don't like Liverpool much, but even I was cheering for them to get the winner after that. If they could take Gerrard back in some capacity I'd like them even more, mind you.

Why can’t referees just stop the time when ball not in play . I’d say about 30 mins in a 45 min half actually has the ball in play .

i don’t blame Newcastle for doing it as the rules rewards time wasting

I think it's pretty universal on the thoughts on Newcastle's timewasting tonight. Yes, it is a part of the game to some degree, but this was a few levels above normal.

Maybe the late winner might make others teams think twice about it. Unfortunately, probably not.

Ya I don't understand why they cant just stop the clock. There was a match last night where the ball was in play for 40 seconds of the 5 minutes added on!! That's is disgraceful....Funny thing is if Newcastle didn't act the bollix they would have gotten a result there, they had Liverpool at arms length and the stadium was quite but their player behaviour got the Anfield fans backs up and the Liverpool players reacted to them. As for Gerard, I don't think there's anyone in Anfield waiting with open arms 😕

He could probably get a game in midfield for us this weather. Henderson injured now aswell.

It does'nt just stop with timewasting though, stopping the momentum is as much a factor as wasting time

Haaland the signing of the century it seems.

9 PL goals for Haaland already and we're only a month into the season

At this rate, he could very well break the record for most premier league goals in a season (34)

As a city fan seen Liverpool score last minute is horrible but knowing Newcastle were trying to time waste from first minute is bitter sweet. Hate that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 30,135 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

The only solution to time wasting in time added on is that the rule changes to, that if the ref adds 5 minutes, then that's 5 minutes of ball in play. This would at least stop all time wasting in time added on. The ref adding 8-10 minutes on would stop time wasting in normal time, or at the very least discourage it heavily

It needs to be addressed with cards, plenty of them retrospectively also, it's ruining the game from a spectators point of view, if I wanted to watch bad acting I could watch fair City or similar. Honestly pope should get a three match ban for that display, and take his medication before the game or get subbed if he is that ill, that was at nil all I think, he did more harm to the game than any violent contact.

My tv was broken so I couldn’t see it live. I was listening to it though and seemed like like Joelinton was taking the p*ss. My Liverpool mates were texting each time he went down and it stopped at 7 yet he played the 90.

    Game needs a stop/start clock!

Neutrals siding.with Liverpool...?! Jesus, Newcastle must have been really taking the piss last night...

Everton next - and they were the pioneers last year, so don't expect anything to change. That said, Ricarlison was the main culprit and he's obviously moved on.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Newcastle got what they deserved. No sympathy for them.

Howe will be gone next season too imo.

Impressed with the objectivity in here over the time wasting.

    Newcastle got what they deserved.

Let's be honest, in normal circumstances, everyone wanted Liverpool to falter again. But the nonsense turned actual football fans against them mid game.

    Says it all.

Everton and Newcastle the worst offenders, against Liverpool at least in recent times. Both have English managers and English goalkeepers. These ’tactics’ are usually attributed to foreigners.

Haaland is on another planet right now. If he stays fit he’s going to break all sorts of records. What a player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,282 ✭✭✭fyfe79

There was a passage of play in the City game, when I think they were 2-0 up, Forest had possession. Haaland sprinted about 30 yards to close down their player, dispossessed him, laid it off and sprinted back up towards goal. It was literally the first time ever I've watched a player and thought it looked like an adult playing against kids. It was unreal. He's some beast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,306 ✭✭✭✭Drumpot

Because of Haalands clever clauses in his contracts he can move clubs as he wishes. Pep effectively got a 250mil best player in the world this summer but the ridiculously undervalued cost of the transfer masked it.

I saw somebody call Haaland a cheat code signing. It will get to the stage where it will just be sportswashing clubs competing against each other.

I said it last season that Newcastle might surprise a few and they have already made massive inroads to the top 6 look. Pathetic really, but the league sold its soul to the devil, all dirty money is good in England.

Newcastle have already made massive inroads? They've won one game (Forest) so far. Way too early to be making those type of statements. I mean they won't be in any danger of being in the bottom third of the league this season, I just don't think they'll be going anywhere with Howe in charge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,869 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

They have also come very close to taking points off of both Man City & Liverpool.

They have bought a few players that were previously linked to other top 6 clubs, making some good signings. I think they will be close to the European spots this season, even with Howe in charge.

In fairness they have played Liverpool, Brighton away and City. Give them bit more time anyway.

If I was Newcastke fan I be more annoyed about offside than injury time.

    EVENFLOW

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,227 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

They also just about rescued a draw at Wolves and drew 0-0 with Brighton. Is that going places or raising their game against bigger teams. Something that lower half teams generally do. I know it's too early in the season really to be making judgements, I just think that with Howe in charge, top 10 will be their limit this season.

    Isak for his second.

Rashford was barely on against Liverpool and Isak was barely off. That's the breaks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,306 ✭✭✭✭Drumpot

They were bottom of the league last Christmas, got new owners and finished the rest of the season with a points tally that would of been 3rd in league. They’ve looked strong against good teams in league , spent 60 million on a striker but this is literally their first full normal transfer window. How is that not massive in comparison to where they were 9 months ago?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,920 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

Yeah, those offsides need to generally be sorted out.

Nobody knows where the lines are going from one check to the next.

I was delighted, but the whole thing is tedious.

And that offside goal came from the one time Pope was not play acting in the box and falling down for a simple catch. If he had of played with more speed Newcastle might have had more chances

I thought last night was beautiful. It’s so rare you get justice in those scenarios. Newcastle deserved nothing from the game, absolutely nothing.

And the thing of it is that if they had tried to play some football they may well have gotten a second / third, such is the fragile nature of Liverpool’s back line at present.

But there really is nothing sweeter than breaking the hearts of cheaters in that fashion. That the ref actually added on time like he’s supposed to made it truly jubilant. They’ll have been utterly sickened. Normally that nonsense works a treat.

Hopefully it knocks morale a bit and Newcastle struggle next few games as a result.
