Will any of this head east to Meath coast? We usually miss all the snow, not sure if that’s relevant to this weather event !

I lived in central europe for a few years and we used to get beautiful hour long displays. Here in East Galway, I've never seen lightning last more than 10 minutes. It's going at least 20 minutes now.

An hour of thunder and lightening not long after finishing up here in the midlands. Loudest thunder i've heard in many a year

No Meath is unlikely to get anything, nothing new there! It might rain at some point tonight tho.

    Major lightning show, Galway!

North Westmeath, epic. Only compares to summer storms in Florida. Near constant lightning and thunder for 40 minutes, beautiful

Lightning knocks out a street lamp in Waterford

Can't imagine anything crazier than this. Feel like I'm in Florida or something. Roll on tomorrow's display.

Lots of lightning brightening the skies in Kells, Meath - must be far away, I can't hear thunder

West Co Wexford quite interesting. Regular lighting up all around but yet to see any forks. Rumbling all around but not very close yet. Big rain drops noisy on Velux windows, not heavy...

Loads of lightning and very heavy rain in West Galway over the past hour. Isn't nature a blast!

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Looks like youghal was the sweet spot in the South! They had their own lightshow to close the Ironman. Looks quiet rest of night for city, next chance tomorrow afternoon before the cool weather takes hold

It's mainly to do with the level at which the CAPE is being released. If the updrafts are a few thousand feet up then it's more likely you will have CC (cloud to cloud) lightning either in the anvil or at levels well above the ground. If the CAPE being released is more surface based, then CG becomes likely in addition to CC. Of course, you can also get particularly powerful CG's that come out of the anvil, but that doesn't seem to be very often in Ireland.

Looks like a recent strike off the Dublin coast.

Still going in Galway..everytime you think sure it would have to be moving away by now..but no flashes of lightning directly overhead for a very long time...this storm is either extremely slow moving...or there is a constant stream of storms feeding up over us

...seems to have finally gone all of a sudden...

Not a lover of rain but feck it we need it here! Only a light shower with the first round of thunder earlier. Nothing whatsoever with the last cell to pass close by. Looked to be 10/15 miles north west of kanturk but it gave us a good show for 30 mins or so
