Importing EV from UK after Brexit

Hi all, did anybody import used EV from UK? Is it any more difficult after Brexit? I have imported a car some years ago from NI and it was easy.. thinking about getting used Kia Niro from the UK as there are none here..

Not an attractive option any more due to VAT.

Just wondering how it works for importing from NI? The link above seems to say that it is treated differently but I got confused......

If the vehicle was registered in Northern Ireland before the 31st Dec 2020 then it's still considered as being in the EU so just VRT to be paid. If it was registered in Northern Ireland after the 31st Dec 2020 then it's a 3rd country import so VAT and import duties have to be paid.

But with no VRT/nox to pay on an EV does the extra VAT not balance it out?

Vat is 21% of the purchase price plus transport of that car here.

you really have to do the sums on the specific car V buying here just before you pull the trigger.

I’ve bought about 14 cars in the UK in the last 6 years (including 4 EV’s) but nothing since brexit.

Just been through this process on a 2021 Zoë. VRT due to the value of the car was €0, VAT will be around €5k (not sure when I pay this) but as I bought from a VAT registered company I got the UK VAT off the price.

Talk to a customs broker, you will need need help to avoid 10% duty also.

I was waiting to somebody to mention the 10% duty. In theory the only EV model you can currently buy without adding the duty is a Nissan Leaf made in Sunderland. The Jag iPace is made in Austria so doesn't qualify. I can't think of any other "British" EV models.

It's called returned goods relief. A car made in the EU can be returned to the EU within 3 years and no duty needs to be paid. It's 3 years from shipping not the registration. Only applies to EU cars .

That's interesting.

So you didn't have to claim anything off Her Royal Highness? The selling garage just deducted the VAT and sold it to you at the reduced price?

And how did you get on with the 10% duty? I'm assuming you've everything squared up at this stage?
