You're literally posting in defence of a thread title ''green' policies are destroying the country' where the OP says it's any green policy, not just aimed at the green party, and you object to being described as anti-green

You do realise you can be critical of various green policies without being "anti green" yes"? And no the OP is not saying its "any" green policies but rather certain green policies he details yes?

Yeah I know you believe the oil industry thing is all a huge conspiracy as opposed to normal business investors doing what big business and investment companies do. And no thats not always in the interest of the ordinary citizen or a counties. Wow that's a surprise isn't it?

And there you go with the conspiracy stuff - back in the U S of A and all the shite that goes on there in business and the US media circus. Here's a tip - leave off reading the American tabloids or conspiracy websites. They'll wreck your head . And there's no country on the planet 20 years ahead of where you think they should be. Thats just fantasy thinking on your part unfortunately.

Part of consensus is having a 'red line' beyond which the relationship is untenable

That red line can shift but that is dependent on the quality of the relationship.

Junior partners in a coalition have little power other than to pull the plug.

If the GP hadn't been using this power in negotiations, I'd frankly, be disappointed in them

yeah, we are where we are

I wrote my under graduate thesis on 'Path dependency'

Decisions taken in the past have a huge impact on the options available to future decision makers

It Ireland had a nuclear industry developed in the 70s, unless it was a massive failure, I would probably have advocated new nuclear 20 years ago. It would have made sense if we had an existing regulatory framework and experience in managing a nuclear sector.

But we didn't. so now the argument is about how much time do we have to make the changes, how fast do we need to de-carbonise etc. The requirements have changed. Nuclear is no longer the preferred solution, we need to focus our resources on technologies that are quicker to deploy and fit the modern dynamic of a diverse distributed grid.

so does anyone know yet the breakdown by sector and by country?

Yeah, Ok, I'll stop reading the English language media, and focus entirely on the output of China and Inda and the other whatabouteries du jour

The gp come across little more than a bunch of malcontents who will happily punch their fellow politicians in the balls, if they think their ideological policies can be pushed past the post.

Threatening to take down a coalition government because you don't get your way frankly is not negotiation, its blackmail.

the realty is no one knows what the output of carbon emissions is by country and by sector.

till that is established everyone is pissing into the wind.

can anyone establish that fact before we proceed?

You are all over the place on that poll.

FF are down 3% and SF are up 3%. FG are down and Independents are up. No change for anyone else

Does logic not dictate that the rise in SF is from FF and that the rise in Independents is from FG. ?

If you were a FG TD would you not be very nervous as to how this government is effecting your vote with it drifting to Independents and a FF TD with it is drifting to SF ?

Don`t fool yourself, there are a lot of, especially rural, FG and FF TD`s looking at how their vote is being whittle away, seeing the Greens in the doldrums, (even lower than Labour who are dead men/women walking politically), and weighing up their options of running as Independents. If all this green nonsense is not gaining the Greens anything then FG and FF are certainly not getting anything from it, but rather being punished by association.

Now that the Green Party, according to you have re-opened the Programme for Government agreement, I would not hold my breath if I was you expecting another one. Not with the flack FF and FG will be getting over the Summer recess.

The reality is everyone is completely pissed of with green policies that have been threatening us with Armageddon for years while delivering sweet fook all…I’m sick of being constantly being told to reduce my minuscule carbon footprint by people who produce 10 times more than I do…I’m throwing my hat at it tbh…

Yeah, we can always depend on that 360MW from the close to 5,000MW installed capacity at peak usage when our requirements are 6,000MW. Thank you greens that really makes all the difference. Worth every penny.

So let me understand this right -- there's too big a gap to get from where we are now to nuclear (using technology that exists), but not too big a gap to get to green hydrogen and a hydrogen economy (using technology that doesn't exist).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,660 ✭✭✭ps200306

    Ryan is quite the weasel:

He welcomes the 15% EU reduction in gas usage but gets a carve out for Ireland who won't have to participate if the cuts become mandatory. The logic is bizarre -- it's because "our gas grid is not interconnected to any other Member State". Uh, what? What does that even mean?

The UK exported £3.4 billion of gas in 2021 of which 47% went to Ireland. Most of the rest went to France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Any consumption we forego could be consumed by another EU member state. Tell me again why we shouldn't be doing our bit? Could it be that Ryan is looking for political cover for his mad fixation on not developing LNG imports and indigenous fuel sources including offshore gas. EU-imposed gas shortages would show him up for the nutter he is.

I see Europe Oil and Gas's exploration license for the area near the Corrib gas field expires tomorrow. As per normal procedure, they applied for an extension three months ago, having completed all the required technical work under the license. And as usual, there is not a peep out of Ryan's department so far. Just like there is not a peep out of them on the Barryroe license which expired this time last year, and has now been awaiting a decision for 15 months (just like he previously made them wait 13 months for approval of a completely routine 2-day seabed survey). Ryan's strategy is clearly to make any potential explorers die of boredom.

Perhaps more in hope than expectation, the CEO of Europa today said:

“FEL 4/19 contains the large, low risk, Inishkea gas prospect and is a strategic asset that can potentially provide a reliable source of low emission energy for Ireland and play a key role in the transition to renewable green power. Gas from the Corrib field, adjacent to the Inishkea prospect, is one of the lowest carbon-intensity gases in Europe, much lower than long distance pipeline gas from Norway, the UK or the Russian gas piped to Europe.

Given that Ireland will continue to require gas into the foreseeable future, having recently agreed plans to build new gas-powered electricity plants, it makes sense to keep this potentially valuable source of indigenous gas available. We therefore hope that the requested licence extension will be granted as soon as possible, which will allow the Company to carry out further technical studies and seek a project partner.”

    Another less charitable commentator observed:

“The news is undoubtedly good today even though the Irish Government’s energy policy over recent years has been noticeably lacking in any knowledge of basic supply and demand energy economics, seemingly thinking that power generation comes from a magic green pot of money.”

4 billion surplus? Don’t think so. We just need to borrow 4 billion less than we thought. It’s not a surplus.

Today and tomorrow like a lot of farmers are my days off.

But up since 6.30 and outside getting jobs done. Looking forward to being paid to stay in bed ( not really) to produce less while other countries produce more on less efficient systems

This right here is the problem.

Unless the GP realise we need security of supply for fossil fuels before someone invents “Large scale energy storage “ we are in trouble.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,480 ✭✭✭✭machiavellianme

The level of Large scale energy storage you speak about is not going to be feasible by 2030. We've just had weeks of near zero wind output. If we get to a point where we have a week of electricity stored, we'll be doing incredibly well. Any longer than that is unlikely.

They're also under the impression that these measures are optional. We need to get off fossil fuels.

Sure but we will probably not be in a position to do so fully for a decade or more. Any other options and technologies are either unfeasible or are still nascent. It's all at the slow start stage exacerbated by the post-COVID supply chain mess and of course the war.

People need to zone out from some of this and not take it personally. Part of those policies include the retrofit and better insulation in our housing stock. It also includes replacing public transport with cleaner options. By any standards these are two policies it is hard to disagree with.

The fossil fuel industry have corrupted the political discourse massively and directly led to the situation we are in now where we are looking at 3c of warming by mid century. Levels of climate change that we could have avoided if these vested interests hadn't spent decades deliberately lying and obfuscation and creating division

It's not a conspiracy theory. The conspiracy has been out in the open for decades. They're criminals who would all be in prison if they didn't own the politicians. Its no different to how the drug cartels operate with impunity because they've bribed or threatened all of the officials.

    Look up Stephen Donsinger

    Hydrogen technology does exist.

We've had fuel cells since the 1830s

By 2030 We'll have several gw in solar and Offshore wind resources that are much more reliable than onshore (these are already in the pipeline, not completely hypothetical like nuclear plant in Ireland)
