An Post delivered item, but also asking for VAT

I received a package through the letterbox today from the US, along with a letter from An Post looking for the VAT on (as it turned out, after some head-scratching) the same package.

From the vendor's website it does appear that I'm liable for the VAT, but since the package was already delivered, what are the potential repercussions if I don't bother paying the €5.27 in question? (Hypothetically, of course...)

well its not like you will ever need an post to deliver a parcel again is it? .........

That's weird, from my experience normally a parcel isn't delivered until the vat is paid, I personally would pay it, to avoid incurring some kind of penalty but up to you

It’s unlikely they’ll come after you for such a small sum, but all those 5.27’s add up. When the client ‘you’ doesn’t pay it, An Post themselves have to, they become liable to the revenue / state for it…

An Post have to recoup the money so if they lose 100,000 a year in unpaid VAT.. that gets passed on to other clients.

they pass them to debt collectors after 30 days
