Is it because she suggested the RNLI should let immigrants drown? Because I can see how that didn't go down well with non-manslaughtery types.

Even Conservatives think that Patel is a cunt.

Johnson never mention the words "resign" or "resigning" once in his speech.

    Beware.

  • He's still in the job. That speech yesterday has quelled the flames significantly. It's bought him time.

Wouldn't trust him one bit to leave in the timeline he said.

Its absolutely hilarious that Suella doesn't even make a top 12 list.

Patel is a first generation immigrant who hates immigrants, suggested leaving people to drown as a solution to channel crossings and thought threatening Ireland with food shortages would be a good idea. Shes a vile evil **** of a woman and thank god the rest of the tory party seem to be aware of this.

Jeremy Hunt is by far the most qualified and least offensive on that list but cant see him getting it with the current state of the torys and Wallace seems like he would just be a DUP wet dream to have as PM.

The reason behind his speech, the tone of his speech, and pretty much everything in his speech, made it clear he was resigning. The fact he may not have specifically said that word doesn't matter. If he were to try and stay on as PM past October while suddenly claiming "Well I never actually said the word "resigning"..." would be the equivalent of "I had my fingers crossed behind the podium so it doesn't count".

He'll try stay on for another few months, whether out of ego or trying to do a bit more to set up future lining of his own pockets, but he's gone in the next few months. Even if he decided to run again as a candidate in the leadership election, it would destroy the entire credibility of the Tory party if he got voted in again.

Hunt would be a disaster in the polls. People haven't forgotten Mr.€unts horrific stint as health secretary

It's more like the husband insisting on staying until after his sky sports subscription ends. Johnson isn't going to fix a thing. Anything he does will be to extract as much for himself as possible before he is forced to leave

He spent years writing columns filled with completely fabricated lies about the harm the EU was doing to freedom and the British economy. If he does that for something he loves....?

Its the same usual hollow stuff from people who spent all of their time on here cheering BoJo on until two days ago. In reality as with this topic and others they have no answers and there are slurry pits containing less crap.

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

Patel comes across as cruel for cruelty sake. She has supported callous policies from the beginning of May's 'hostile environment' through to expanding that to making it illegal to rescue drowning children...

She is corrupt, funnelling UK foreign Aid money into corporate accounts where they were used to build things like luxury 5 star resorts..

Johnson is self serving and not that ideological. Patel is an extreme far right zealot who actually hates immigrants and poor people. She would be much worse

I really think we should change the thread title to "Boris is toast, who is next" or something similar.

Otherwise this thread has served it's purpose really.

There is no benefit to Brexit, it is a damaging ideal

    Its a bit like socialism.

Everyone who promotes the idea of a socialist society claims that all the failed or totalitarian socialist systems over the years just didn't do it right.

It's the same with Brexit, it has unimaginable benefits, if you just do it right.

Even Stammer was at that sort of folly earlier in the week.

Boris himself said last week the world needs more women in charge, it will be a more peaceful place. He's right about that

That's a staggering indictment of how incredibly weak the list of potential candidates are that "None of the above" is neck and neck with the lead.

Every single one of them has the stink of Boris on them.

They have all supported , defended and ignored his incompetence and lying and for every one of them that has held office under Boris , they have their own stink from their own failures and controversies.

    Talk about Hobson's choice..

Except when that woman is Priti Patel - She is just awful in every way.

Iain Duncan Smith, Margaret Thatcher, and John Major came out of the blue to win the leadership election.

Who comes forward is not limited, therefore, to the names we know. For all we know, someone like the above may come out and snatch the election. Precedent shows that it's highly likely.

Patel threatened to starve Ireland . Not very patriotic of anyone Irish to bang her drum even if the “leftists” hate her….

It's like trying to choose a toilet at a music festival.

There are one or two who might not be completely terrible but I think it'll have to be an overt culture warrior who succeeds Johnson, not someone intelligent or thoughtful. Even that individual is someone who aided and abetted the sleaze and corruption.

Actually, have just read that due to party rules, he can't put his name forward to try be elected again in the next leadership election.

They seem to be going more far right than usual. I'd say she'd make Thatcher look like a saint

The woman worked hard and wasn't a moron. I'm not a Thatcherite but she was head and shoulders above these cretins. She shaped the EU perhaps more than anyone else in her time or since and understood its value. The best Johnson could do was beg like a dog for an extension and then slip crowns on pint glasses.

The youngster William Hague probably the biggest example of that. I was only getting into betting at the time and the Racing Post preview headlined him up at 50/1. Seemed very implausible to me that a 36-year-old could win against the heavyweights so I ignored their suggestion.

I don't think John Major could have been that big a shock outsider as history makes out (hell, he was Chancellor at the time and previously Foreign Sec so there's a natural career progression rather than 'out of the blue') - he was probably 3rd fav. IDS was always a front-runner as I recall.

Nope. It was initially Portillo then Clarke, but there was no way the grassroots would chose Ken.

Wallace is only top of the poll because he is the one people know the least about.

Any current top level Tory in the limelight has been found to be a complete sht.
