Rendezvous with Rama is one of Clarke's best novels (it won the Campbell, Hugo, Jupiter, and Nebula Awards)

The story begins as a huge, mysterious, cylindrical object appears in space, swooping in toward the sun. The citizens of the solar system send a ship to investigate before the enigmatic craft, called Rama, disappears. The astronauts given the task of exploring the hollow cylindrical ship are able to decipher some, but definitely not all, of the extraterrestrial vehicle's puzzles.

Clarke is a master at pacing a story, and as each mystery is allowed revelation, another greater question arises. From the vastness of its technology and trilateral symmetry of its structures, Rama's secrets are strange evidence of an advanced civilization.

Figures it better to resurrect this thread than start a new one. :)

I know that there are sequels to this book by another author but is Rendevous with Rama a self contained story with an ending? Or are there threads left hanging that need to be followed?

From what I remember the book wraps up itself, although there is an ominous thought at the end of the book that leaves it open to a sequel.

The sequels really go off from the first one, loses a fair bit of the mystery. They aren’t terrible but they aren’t the worst.

’Eon’ by Greg Bear is another book, similar to ‘Rendezvous with Rama’ that had sequels that, while enjoyable, just take away from the original story, somewhat.
