No, I don't think you are wrong in thinking the battery idea is a costly one.

In time there will be a feed in tariff which at the moment no one knows what the value of that will be. One supplier has announced at 13.5c per kWp so its likely to be in that ball park. That becomes the biggest battery you can get, and without the 20% loss of charging then using the power and the replacement batteries in the future.

As rx8 also says, you can tailor your usage, when Eddi has done heating your water, you can turn on the dishwasher, or 'er indoors can bake! In the winter, if Eddi announces the cylinder is hot, I will kick on the heating for 5 minutes to circulate the heat around the rads and we'll begin again.

Sure, when there was no feed in tariff, batteries were the way to go, but its all changed a bit now.

Getting a battery or not is an interesting one. I didn't get one with my install in April. I don't think there's a 'one size fits all' and you have to figure out what's best for your own circumstances. I have an EV on order so that should soak up most of any summer excess along with my Eddi. I'm expecting that the next EV I get (in about 3 years, maybe even the one after that in 6 years) will also be able to function as a home battery. If so, any home battery that I bought now would be mostly redundant and definitely not stand a chance of paying for itself over time.

If I wasn't planning to get an EV I'd have gone with a battery as it would just about pay for itself over time.

    Final quote!

    11.4 k after grant

    20 405 watt panels

    6k sollis inverter

    5kwh puredrive battery

    Hot water eddi, no ber

Not the worst I suppose.. given current prices

I think you’re right to go with what you have with the quote you have. Adding 3 or 4K to that for a 5kw battery to me doesn’t make sense. It might cost a bit more when the time comes but there’s nothing to stop you adding the batteries later if it makes sense then. I have similar sized system, E/W split, no battery for 2 years and I’ve only exported about 1500kwh. I’m not anti battery and am going to add a diy one and more panels I just think for a lot of people the systems aren’t big enough to support an eddi and a battery and from an up front cost the eddi is significantly cheaper

I will be going with Solis 5kW (I believe it’s a S5-GR1P5K). Installation is still in the future.

    Hi,

Random Q and feel free to move to another thread if needed.

I had my install completed earlier this year based on a quote from late last year, however 2 items were changed during the install

340W panels were used instead of the quoted 380W panels, meaning I ended up down 480w based on 12 panels being installed.

I was due to get a Solis 6kW Hybrid but a Solis 5kW Hybrid was install.

Roughly how much should I expect to get knocked off the over all price? Expecting the installer to come back with finalised price in next few days.

    Thanks!

Would appreciate some advice on whether this ok? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,469 ✭✭✭MAULBROOK

Sadly it starting to look like the going rate. But its 20 panels so not too bad.

If you are willing to compromise on the battery by going with a Pylontech or Dyness. Then it will be well below 11k. But having said that I would stick with the Puredrive battery.

Try a haggle (long shot) to get below 11k.

As advised here (thanks) i want to ring supplier and provisionally tell them to bring some extra panels on installation day. How much should i expect to pay?

    16x 370w JA panels

    Monocrystalline =

    5.9kwp system

The quote is not broken down so im not sure how much i should be willing to pay/haggle when I give them a buzz

About €400 per panel. Call them and ask is the simple answer.

I paid an extra €200 each on the day for 310w panels but that was 2 years ago. Last I heard the same fella had been charging around €250 for 375w additions I think.

Just ask them for a price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,201 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

What was your total price that you paid? Based on that we'll be able to give you an estimate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 126 ✭✭Scoopsire

    Thanks Phil,

€5.6k was the quote (last Oct/Nov) for the following:

    12 x 380W giving 4.56 kW

    2.4KW Pylontec battery

    6kW Solis Hybrid Inverter

    Eddi Diverter

    Wifi Dongle

That's a damn good price, which makes haggling a bit more tricky. Plus although we use the total kWp as a gauge on value, there isn't always a huge price change from a 340 to a 380w.

Either way, you paid less than the target of €1k/kWp, but you were then shorted nearly half a kWp. Difference in inverter is only maybe a few hundred.

I'd probably go back and ask for €500 back, settle on as much as you can get. As I say the prices aren't that big of a jump, so it's not like the installer made €500 more profit. But you still got the short end of the stick so might as well chance your arm.

Has the installer indicated any kind of a discount at all or are you just hoping?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 126 ✭✭Scoopsire

They actually come back to me since I wrote my last post

Offering €160 off the bill, if they'd said 200 off I'd prob have just gone grand!

But agree did well on the price lots of haggling, but worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,201 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

Yeah to be honest that's one of the best prices in a while here.

    And so we are finished!

The panels went live at around 12:30 and they've provided us with 15.2kWh so far today. We've taken nothing from the grid since.

We got to a maximum of 3800 Watts, which is about 316 Watts per panel on average, not bad for 380 Watt panels on a hazy day I reckon.

Eddi has provided us with a tank full of hot water and various appliances are on (washing machine, telly, dishwasher) along with the house idle of 400 Watts or so, and the panels are still supplying more power than we are using.

Very pleased with our supplier (not one of the ones listed). Very obliging, very friendly, and considering its taken a week and a day to finish, very cheap!

Maybe add the supplier to the list

May I ask the reason why you didn't go for the hybrid version of the Solis?

I know you decided against going the battery route but just wondering if you did consider leaving the door half open at some point just in case. :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 136 ✭✭scunermac

My installer doesn’t offer the option for a hybrid inverter apparently. They have a very fixed model, with only standard inverter’s used. That’s why the price can be kept low I guess.

I’m not sure if you could call them a true SAAS offering, but that’s essentially what they are. They have a pre-defined offering depending on the size of the system requested. If you request a battery as part of their install, they still fit a standard inverter, along with a battery that actually has an in-built inverter.

I weighed up the cost of going with a different installer who would provide a hybrid inverter from the get-go for an additional cost, against going with this one at a lower cost and then later if I ‘really’ want to add a battery (I’m still not convinced I need one) I could still do it by adding a Sofar ME3000 first. So the door is not closed completely even by going with a standard inverter.

I wouldn't know how to go about that, or what the criteria is.

I guess if Admin thinks its sensible to add based on one person's dealings, I'm happy to let them know who it was.

I tried, but appears to be read only (uneditable). Tried using Google Chrome too, perhaps its because I use a MacBook. Sorry.

Hi folks, I was quoted originally with a power drive 5kwh and accepted a Dyness 5.1 kwh instead as shorter wait time. Panels went up two weeks ago and electrician is doing his bit today and tomorrow morning. Just wondering coz Maulbrook mentioned, should I look for a discount for the battery change?, will post all about install when finished, thanks to everyone on here for the wisdom
