I am thinking of putting in solar tubes to heat the wter soon. How far away can the panel be from the tank before it starts causing a problem? At the moment it looks like it will be at least 20m, is that too much?

What do you mean by 20m? Are you talking about the collector to cylinder distance? Are are you talking about the total pipework in the system? i.e. distance * 2?

Total pipework distance in my system is about 18m and no issue.

Shorter is better but for longer runs insulate the hell out of the pipes to conserver as much heat as possible.
