    R.O. will remove certain elements that are 'dissolved' in the water. A filter is just a mechanical screen that will remove 'solids' bigger than the mesh size. So you can't compare R.O. with a filter, they do 2 completely different jobs. And carbon is used primarily to remove chlorine from the water. So it really depends on what you water stream is made up of, and what you want to remove form the stream.
