Points made arent wrong though. If Munster are to be at this level and actually make a final then its fair to look at the sides who're doing that.

Attending the Aviva yesterday after last weeks game, a couple of things to note , Munster supporters had the place rocking last week and really drive the team on for the whole game, Leinster support yesterday was in fits and starts and no competition. On the game Toulousain was a shadow of the team that played Munster, they were out on their feet early doors and Leinster tactics were from what Munster had done wrong. Sexton kicking was higher and shorter to put pressure on and allow the followers time to get to the tackle, JGP was moving the ball very quickly and dragging the big heavy Toulousain players around the pitch and wore them down very quickly. Munster by kick the ball so much gave them time to rest. And the biggest factor yesterday was Toulousain we’re not as dirty as they played the Munster players all through out the game and Leinster players were not hit like Zebo and Peter.

Sexton said after the game that Munster had softened them up. It is a fair assessment.

I think we should have won last week and I hope the players know it and learn from it.

Toulouse were pretty poor against Munster, surely most saw that right?

They gave up a mountain of turnovers, and were generally sloppy with the ball in possession, butchering multiple try scoring chances in the first half.

Definitely the Toulouse team yesterday looked to be a tired side, but still, Leinster absolutely did not allow them to play. They couldn't live with the speed of ruck ball, and were chasing shadows in defence. The scoreline in no way flattered Leinster.

The support yesterday in the ground was great btw. It possibly went a little flat with around 15 to go, but the game was won at that point.

Four points of reference as a difference

    1. front row around the pitch.

    - Furlong pass

    - Sheehan carry (under the posts) before the 2nd Lowe try

    2. 2nd rows.

    - Ross Molony was magnificent yesterday. His pivot play in midfield was fantastic. It adds so many layers to what a team can do in attack. When all your players are that comfortable you pose many questions of a defence, which creates mistakes and space. Ryan and Molony picked off a lineout each at crucial times too.

    3. Backrow.

    - the biggest impact in the QF was the number of turnovers but too much of the positive stuff came on the wrong side of the ball. The Leinster backrow as a unit offer a good chunk of everything, the balance is far better.

    4. Scrum half.

    - In general Murray too often kills the tempo. JGP made a few big mistakes yesterday but the pace at which the game was played came from him. And Leinster were comfortable with it, Toulouse were not. This is how the game has changed since the 2019 RWC.

Sexton's incisiveness and decision making; he absolutely toyed with their defence yesterday and ripped them asunder. There is no other Irish 10 who is as effective with ball in hand.

Henshaw's ability to power through the gain line every time; he reads the game superbly. If they pack in on him in defence, he moves the ball well. If he's faced with only one defender, he just powers through the contact and ruptures their defence.

But a lot of that comes from what the forwards deliver. Toulouse had 40% possession in both QF and SF according to rugbypass website.

The difference is how Munster and Leinster used that 60% is stark

Might be better to discuss that in either of the two Leinster threads.

Toulouse yesterday were a shadow of the team that played Munster and Leinster had learned how to beat them from that game and Jonny stated that they had the answers given to them. As for the atmosphere in the stadium yesterday was not in the same league as the Munster game. A lot yesterday was in and out to the bar all game or on the phone to their mates or video of players.

I thought a mod waded into the Munster forum last week to demand no discussion on Leinster or their players.

Or does that not apply to Leinster boys crowing about their match ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,790 ✭✭✭✭Burkie1203

Is discussing major key differences between the QF and SF against the same opponent not allowed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,192 ✭✭✭mun1

No, you should bring it to the match thread or the Leinster thread if you wish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭cuttingtimber22

The only way to sort this is for Munster and Leinster to play the same teams next weekend (injury permitting).

We will know our level then/how much we have improved..

Results are paramount, obviously. But of course atmosphere matters.

They gave up a mountain of turnovers, and were generally sloppy with the ball in possession, butchering multiple try scoring chances in the first half.

… because Munster won a mountain of turnovers and were excellent in defence.

    Credit where it’s due.

Cheering in support of your team is thought to be a bit uncouth in Leinster. Instead, politely clapping in appreciation of good play is favoured. It was good to see the famous Ballsbridge Hush brought to a larger stage.

The players Munster were missing is obviously a huge factor too - that Leinster team was more or less full strength bar Baird (and maybe Larmour, but he seems to have fallen off the face of the planet in the last year). Munster's injured list has been well documented. It's not a complete 1-1 analysis.

Like Burkie mentions Munsters backrow and it's unbalanced nature (offering more in D than going forward), completely sidestepping the fact that Coombes, Hodnett, and to a lesser extent, JOS were all unavailable through injury. We played the backrow Vs Toulouse out of necessity, nobody else was available - Jack Daly was on the bench like!!! Our next available backrows were Daniel Okeke and then Conor Moloney (or one of the other Wasps extras).

Same with second row skill and front row power - Beirne and Kilcoyne are huge losses in this regard.

Spot on, tbh. Beirne, Gav Coombes, Conway, Killer, Snyman. All 5 of them would’ve been likely to start. And Hodnett would’ve at least made the bench.

I think someone else mention it earlier, but the 2015 RWC QF is a good comparison, where Ireland were missing 5 starters. That’s a huge part of the context here that some are overlooking.

Larmour has been excellent this season for Leinster and if he hadn't been injured I'm pretty sure he'd have kept his spot in the team.

Yeah, I'm not disputing how well the Munster back row played, O'Mahony in particular.

That said, there was a sloppiness to the Toulouse attack, and a repeated tendency in that game to under-resource rucks. I think it's also fair enough to say that a different referee would have taken a different view on a number of the turnovers, and penalised Munster for players not supporting their body weights etc.

I'm not disputing Munster produced a great performance, but my response was to a suggestion that Toulouse had been far better the week before, when I actually thought they were pretty poor.

God forbid someone have opinions on a forum. An actual discussion might break out - the horror!

    That's a high horse you're on there

Do you remember your hissy fit when a Munster Fan posted a GIF from a Leinster game after the footage was requested.

My only point is that those things don’t happen in a vacuum; they looked sloppy in attack at times because of Munster’s line speed in defence.

Equally, with a different ref, we might have had more penalties, or some might have been blown sooner. Take the one where O’Mahony went off injured, it could easily have been blown sooner. He went off with the score 24-14.

Absolutely, I thought the ref allowed an extra second or two before blowing and at times that allowed Toulouse get the ball free again and continue an attack whereas we could easily have got a penalty and allow us clear our lines.
