    That’s why I (nearly) always abandon those ones and hope that solving one of the other words will give me the letter I need. When I forget to do that, I nearly always end up disappearing down a rabbit hole.

    Exactly! If I miss a word by 1 letter and there are 2 or more possible alternatives, move on and most times I'll hit that letter on a different word. And if not, probably a letter already in that word.

    E.g _OAST - could be TOAST
