Am I correct on thinking that anyone with PV and a battery system but without a smart meter, will get a FIT based on their estimated overproduction despite them possibly not actually sending anything to grid (because of the battery?)

If you don't have a smart meter, surely you will get NO FIT?

Someone on Facebook was claiming this the other day. That at least some of the suppliers are going to pay you based on an estimate going by your system.

    Sounds like nonsense to me.

I'll believe it when I see it. I'm already producing 175MWh per year. Honest, Sir! 😁

Yes. Provided you haven't rejected a smart meter, you will get an estimated export based on the size of your inverter (submitted to ESBN on the NC6). See page 26 of the attached:

Basically, multiply your inverter size by 297.402 to get the amount of deemed export. e.g 5kW inverter = 1,487.01kWh.

And you get 5c for your export and pay 34c for your import or something like that? Meaning in fact you are giving away your export for free of course if you compare with more competitive tariffs.

What if you didn't turn away your smart meter but actively worked to have it removed? 🤣

I'm not bothered about FIT, but until a smart meter is pushed on me, it's effectively free money.

I don't get you - in the sitatuon I'm talking about, you'll be getting paid for a fixed export amount, despite not actually exporting anything, or very little.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,887 ✭✭✭Alkers

It's in all the documentation about exports being estimated in the absence of a smart meter

i was told my meter will run backwards if exporting .. (20year old 24hr )

dont know if this will be the case though

My meter is a 1966 relic and since install on 22nd February has gone backwards by 107 units on a 4.2kw system. Has anyone here actually gone from this type situation to a new meter to know what exactly happens to the units that were wound backwards, are they given as credit or lost or wait and see scenario! I have submitted 1 reading and added a few units to my last one to keep it ahead a bit. I know the general consensus here is keep it as long as possible but is that advice from experience or hearsay.

Why did you get the second battery if you're effectively on net metering?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,124 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Maybe I wasn't clear in my sarcasm :-)

I'm awaiting a contract where not only the rates are near the best in market, but where you also get paid for export (virtual or real). The cynic in me says this will not come. If you get paid for export, the utility company will probably charge you an extortionate rate for import.

Net metering will only last so long, I expect before winter I will have no choice but accept a new meter so that and the fact it was going at a decent price off a fellow boardsie it was also a no brainer, the 10kw battery now will do my night use in full in the future with reserve for power cuts. I was thinking about the diy route until it came up but was unsure about that way.

I was going for the Seplos but decided against it due to the issues that some here have with the overvoltage warnings and the Solis. I asked Seplos about it and don't have too much confidence in their answers. Definitely a language barrier as well.

Trying to decide between REC and Batrium now, completely different budget range but I just want something that works. I'm not per se looking for the cheapest solution, I enjoy the DIY aspect of it. Just feels like a hobby and it's a great addition to the house. But I don't want a half baked solution that kind of works but not always. And I just like the CANBUS idea where the inverter knows what the BMS is doing. Because you can always operate a Seplos in 'dumb' mode without the CAN linked.

Currently leaning towards a Batrium WatchMonCore + Cellmate K9 + Shunt + shipping + customs charges, I think it's roughly €750. Seplos would have been around €300 or slightly less I think. Batrium seems to have a bigger community which is handy for stuff like Home Assistant and troubleshooting if necessary.

The Batrium has a feature where it emulates the LG RESU battery, which is supported by the Solis. But having said that I don't know anyone with a Solis and a Batrium, so it will still be a little bit of a gamble.

I'm open to any other suggestions as well.

Bord gais are taking registrations now in their site for microgeneration payment. Rates announced in June and payment in July.

They also state about deemed export quantity of you don't have a smart meter and your payment will be worked out as follows

    • Deemed Export Quantity = MEC x Capacity Factor x Export Factor x Provision Interval
    • Deemed Export Quantity = 535.30kWh (=1.8 X 0.097 x 0.35 x 8760)

That estimate is not too far off, with 7kwp but used 6 in the calculation, last year exported 1435kwh but also I had small battery, and no pv until May.

This year it will not be near that with the big battery but I'd be happy to get paid for the estimate number 😁

As long as day rate is not €1/kwh ofc

That MEC value is that the kWp of your panels or inverter size? (and at time of writing bord gais site is down!! "The requested URL was rejected. Please consult with your administrator.")

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭fael

Wondered the same thing, have 8.1kWp of panels on a 6kW inverter. I've had a look at the Bord Gais website, which refers to the ESB, which refers to the CRU. Rooted through a few documents there to see if there was more info on the MEC. But all companies make the same statement, referring to the NC6 form that was used to declare your installation: "MEC is a capacity value in units of kW, representing the generation capacity of the installed generation equipment, as declared via ESBN’s NC6 (or equivalent) form".

And the NC6 form does not ask for the PV panels, it just wants to know the rating of the inverter in kVA. For my inverter, Solis 6kW, it's equal to 6kV

Long story short, IMHO it's the rating of the inverter (and I assume that's limited to 6kV for domestic use).

I declared my 3kW Sofar 3000TL PV Inverter and my 3kW Sofar ME3000 Storage Inverter, so that makes 6kW for me 😀

I bought a 6kW grid tie inverter from AliExpress for €89, it's lying on a shelf here somewhere. Does that count if I fill in a MC6 form and put that on it? 😀

My batteries arrived today after ordering them on 28/03 from oye.

Now to start building a case to compress them and do some top balancing.

My solar panels haven't arrived yet due to Shanghai being under lockdown. Can I top balance now and leave them be until I get my solar built in 1-2 months or do I need to do the top balancing just before I introduce them to the system?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭fael

Not sure how much research you have done before deciding to compress the batteries, but this here is a good explanation why it's a waste of time IMHO: Why compression will not extend battery life (something else kills them before). - YouTube

my batteries arrived today also, wast expecting them .so soo. .:)

going to top ballance and make a rack for them . also need to decide on BMS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,209 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

Make sure your rack can take the weight. I bought one on Amazon which claimed it was rated for the load and it started to dip within weeks.

I built a frame using unistrut for my original 16 x Lead-Acid's. It was just like assembling meccano :)

5 weeks is extremely quick. Ordered mine on 28th Feb and due to arrive this Friday 6th may. Ordered 16 cells from oye store and 16 from pwod. All arriving Friday or Monday.

Those feckers in the Oye store, see what they sent me...............

For the order 8145356743256987 on January 26, the logistics company informed me that because the package was lost during transportation

Our plan is to arrange re delivery from China, but it takes 40-50 working days to receive the package

I'm very sorry to trouble you, and I hope you can understand that I have extended your protection time to 77 days.

If you agree, we will arrange to resend it to you tomorrow
