It's a pity we designed motorways with 160km/hr design speeds. Some amount of money wasted. Meanwhile in most of Europe it's 130 on far worse (some of them) motorways than ours.

Ah yeah, I had a fair idea that stat was a bit wonky 🤭

In reality, they could just cover up the reminder signs, and just replace the speed limit signs at the motorway entry points.

There is no legal obligation to have all of the reminder signs.

In fact, I dont see reminder signs when driving abroad.

Yes there will be a cost, but not as much as you might think.

Btw . I'm opposed to any to reduction, in fact of like to see motorways increased to 130km/h. ( Or even 140 like in Poland) but haven driven in Poland... 140 with their standard of driving can sometimes be a bit rediculas.

But I'm sure no-one would have an issue with the cost of replacing signs with higher limits... Strange isn't it.

    Not to worry.

Besides we need all those ships to deliver the cars 🙂

It was introduced here in Ireland in 1979. I do not think it is a bad thing, I have been doing economy driving for many years, reducing speed is just one of the many ways to save fuel when driving.

How about actually enforcing the existing speed limits. My observation of urban driving in Ireland is that almost 100% of the drivers completely ignore the 50 limit once they're outside very narrow streets and if you're doing 100 or 120 you get overtaken all the time.

I have an electric car so I can drive at 140 then right ?

Eamon Ryan is making it very difficult for folks like me (who would normally try and make an effort to be green)not just give up and say fook that.

It also says a lot about boards motoring forum that so many dont see this as a totally ridiculous pile of shoite. If I want to save the planet I can drive at 100 if I want - but if I dont then I should be allowed do 120 ( or more )

We all share the planet. You don't have your own planet.

I see a possible money maker for government, average speed camera's where you pay more to drive over 100 km/h.

People are cripped with extra costs, much of it fanned by government taxes and levies. And the latest they come up with is yet more nanny state rules to make your life even more miserable. They can fcuk right off. We need a revolution here.

I have a Campervan with the bunk on top of the cab, possibly the worst vehicle for aerodynamics. The amount of fuel saved from driving slower is shocking!! Up to 40% with a small reduction of motorway speed. The extra time on the road is minimal (as you pointed out).

Drove from Dublin to tipp yesterday,

People absolutely crawling it on the motorway doing 80kmph

    Trucks were overtaking them even

    It's absolutely infuriating and dangerous

Funnily enough, there's more than just Eamonn that sees the need for dramatic change.

Is driving fast a significant joy in your life, overall?

'we need a revolution' over motorway speed limits. you mean we need to overthrow the government because of this?

Europe saying "work from home 3 days per week" when I'm not even allowed to work from home for one. And they want to cut the speed limits on my commute? Out.

In a way you might be making the case for lowering the upper limit.

If 80 is widespread the gap to 120 could indeed be dangerous in some circumstances.

It's not widespread only a few, usually elderly fair enough but enough to cause enough hassle for everybody else

120 is absolutely fine, if some people wanna drive a bit slower than 120 that's grand but when trucks are over taking you that's taking the pissh

Trucks pulling out to overtake slow traffic and cars doing 120+ in the right hand lane is bad news all right.

irish people are terrified of driving in the left lane. i drove to cork the evening of the all ireland last year - loads of cork and limerick fans returning home - and the M8 was clear for over 1km in front of me, and 1km behind me - and the right hand lane was essentially full. i was doing the same speed as the cars in the right hand lane too, probably 100km/h.

It’s a sliding scale. It’s one of the many idiotic bricks in the ever growing nanny state. Greens are front and centre of this rubbish. So taken as a whole, yes, we need a massive change in political direction and one that works for the ordinary person. Not the climate alarmists and lovers of big government and never ending regulation of the minutia of our lives. The ever creeping of the state into all aspects of our lives has been something that really concerns me in recent years. Covid being the epitome of that crushing nanny statism

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,502 ✭✭✭✭John_Rambo

It's unbelievable. Since we got the Campervan (which has been an eye opener as a slower driver) we obviously stay left but we're constantly coming up on slower drivers in cars capable of faster speeds in the middle lane forcing us to travers right in to the middle lane behind them and then to the far right overtaking lane and then back across the two lanes to the driving lane to maintain our 95kph to 100kph. I guess we could just slow to their pace and stay left, but you're causing a rolling road block of two lanes then.

GAA exodus from the capital is the worst, a selfish, clueless shitshow free for all.

I don't really have a problem with capable cars driving fast on a motorway, there's no safer place to do it other than the track.

Why doesn't Ryan and his eight well paid advisors have a look at barrier free tolls like on the M50.

The amount of diesel wasted stopping and accelerating again must be huge for trucks and buses not to mention the extra emissions .

I'm sorry but what is stopping people driving 100 on the motorway, currently, if they want to? I've dropped by consumption by a l/100km because I want to, recently. And, yes, that includes driving at 110kmh on the motorway but, this morning, I had a medium distance journey and was running a bit late. I was able to make up that time with a small increase to the legal speed.

The greens tried to use road safety to cut the motorway speed limit a few years back, now it's Ukraine. This was after they straight up had Gormless John trying it in the FF government. At least he was honest that it was an environmental policy.

Ryan is duplicitous in trying to hide his agenda behind other reasons.

Conor Faughnan tore their "Safety" argument to shreds in 2019. Calling on the Green rep to just be honest about it being an environmental policy, Green tried to double down on his figures with Faughnan casually dismantled and then got a bit annoyed and straight up called him either incompetent or a liar

the amount of diesel wasted with folks waiting at traffic lights for the green man lit for non existent pedestrians while Dublin city council try frustrate motorists into taking a bicycle is another travesty.

Can ya not just drive around the 120kmph like 99% of people please, life's hard enough already

On an empty M8 I'll drive along at 100 to 110 all day long. There's an overtaking lane for a reason, feel free to make use of it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,502 ✭✭✭✭John_Rambo

A vehicle driving 110kph in the driving lane on the motorway won't impede a competent driver.

Do you really have difficulty overtaking someone driving at 100km/h on a motorway?

When there in the right hand lane doing 100kmph yes I do have some issues with it
