    Did your parents not love you?

    Imagine if one of them, or another relative you were close to, was diagnosed with a terminal illness and given 6 months to live. Would you compare taking them to hospital to "fixing a broken model choo choo"?

    The 5 days unpaid should be available to all staff, whether they have sick children, relatives, pets, items requiring repair etc as the reason they need the time off.

    You chose a stupid example to bring up something that wasn’t even relevant. The argument you’re trying for is normally introduced in the context of parental leave, ie - families with children. It’s proponents argue that the same leave should apply to employees who don’t have children, but that argument ignores the purpose for the leave.

    In this case your argument doesn’t apply because the leave already would apply to all employees regardless of whether or not they have children. It’s similar to the Family and Medical Leave which already exists in the US:

    Unpaid leave to fix your choo-choo offers no benefit whatsoever to society as a whole.

    No. If you want 5 days off then contact your company and ask for them to be included in your contract

    5 isn't a lot, a sick child will easily cover that in the Winter, especially when they first start in childcare. I'm in Germany and I get 10 per child per annum, partner gets the same. We needed the most of those when our kids were young.

    That's 5 days more than currently so that's useful. My kids have grown up and moved away but I have my parents to care for.

    So far this year I've used up 6 days of annual leave in random half days for medical appointments. There's more to come. So the flexibility to take some leave (albeit unpaid) will be very useful for me and a couple of my siblings. I'm lucky that my employer will let me take a few hours off and work up the time later when I run out of leave (by September I think). WFH helps too as working until 10 pm in the city centre and then commuting home isn't fun.


    Let's hope this legislation doesn't take forever to get done and implemented.
