We need a coach that won't piss off at the first sign of difficulty, Rowntree formerly coached Georgia so I think he has a high threshold for difficulty

much as i like the guy, and im sure it wasnt his all his fault, but munster's back play was woeful under jones. why he thought using 5'10 rory scannell take pretty much every first phase ball into contact was a good idea was beyond me, especially when we had 6'4 chris farrell outside him. the backline wasn't exactly the reason why SA won the rwc either (as good as they were)

id like him to do well but he strikes me as more of a head coach/DOR probably

When was the last time Munster's backs looked really cohesive though, attack-wise? They weren't great under Foley or Erasmus either. Our backplay has gotten steadily more incompetent no matter who is coaching it. Absolutely no idea why that would be the case but think it has to go deeper than Larkham or Jones.

By the looks of last weekend, rowntree took over ages ago

not disagreeing there definitely, but all the same id have questions about a coach whos go to move off a 5m attacking scrum was to go straight to an out-half playing centre to crash it up rather than use the man-mountain standing outside him at 13. i honestly dont think i ever saw them even doing a 12-13 tip on just to change it up a bit

I absolutely agree in that I don't think Jones did a good job but what i don't understand is why he didn't do a good job. He has done excellently with SA, and Erasmus had no shortage of coaches he could bring in so clearly he has a bit about him as a coach.

I'd love for Murray Kinsella or someone to do a really deep analysis of Munster's backplay from Foley's era on. Interview guys who were here and left, interview Academy guys who didn't make it and interview guys who were on the pitch against Exeter (and against Leinster, and against Connacht becuase the same issues are repeating in high pressure situations).

If I could offer a guess, I think when pressure comes on this Munster side reverts to a "I don't want to be the one to mess up" mentality, so no one steps up and calls the move or makes the pass etc. That's not to criticise any individual player because the problem is clearly cultural to the team in that it exists independently of the individuals who are playing. But knowing that and resolving it are very different issues, I was hoping Currid would help them resolve it but I don't think it's anywhere near gone yet.

Official confirmation on Rowntree. Two year deal. No word on other coaches.

Happy out with that, good timing as well as it will give a lift before this weekends game, both for the squad and the fans so there'll probably be a few more bums on seats, it's like it was planned...

They've close to 20k tickets and all corporate packages sold already so bums on seats was hardly the reason for the announcement today.

Happy with that, but you'd have to think the backroom team appointments will be pretty crucial.

Early thoughts are that this is a regressive step. Rowntree is a very good forwards coach, but definitely not head coach material and fear that this appointment will be a continuation to the battering ram, bulldozing approach of JVG. But I will hold full judgement until the rest of Rowntree's backroom team is announced.

I believe that Tabai Matson was Munster's first choice, but he decided to remain with the Quins.

Is a two year contract normal for these jobs? McFarlane and Friend have 3 years contracts, and Leo's 2 year contract is by his own request.

Your view may turn out to be ture but I really don't know how at this moment in time you can say this with such certainty

Stadium holds 25,600 which means less than 80% of tickets are sold 5,000 tickets at an average of €35 a pop (assuming the pricier tickets are sold) is 175k just on the ticket value alone

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,226 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

The stadium rarely sells out outside the Christmas Leinster game (which was originally a sell out). There'll be more than 20K there on Saturday and it'll be a crowd that the vast majority of rugby clubs would kill for.

I know full well what tickets cost but do you honestly think the timing of Rowntree's appointment had anything to do with trying to get 2/3k more fans into the stadium for next Saturday?

Weren't you the fella who, earlier in the season, said at the last Pro14 match you were at there were about a hundred people at it? Hmmm....

Could Rob Howley come into the equation as an experienced backs/attack coach. Has worked with Rowntree previously at Lions level.

Was interviewed back in 2019 for the role with Munster before Larkam got it.

Obviously around the same time he was banned for coaching for 2 years im not sure if that was announced before or after larkam got the gig.

He has Obviously served his suspension and I believe he is currently involved with Canada.

What about Johne Murphy as attach coack? He knows Rowntree from Leicester and has been doing well coaching in the schools game with Newbridge.

Working as a coach consultant in MLR. Dont see him coming back here to work for while yet

That's true but in seasons before covid some pool home games had attendance of 25k. There might be an asterix over those figures including season ticket holders but with people not being able to attend games for a while with covid and not having a 3rd home pool game would be great if it's as close as possible to a sell out. That said there's still a few days for people to pick up tickets.

     seasons before covid

Covid is still a thing for a lot of people. Also, we all got used to not attending games/events during Covid, people have to get back into a habit of getting out and about again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,436 ✭✭✭✭Eod100

Yeah get ya, meant it more the last time there weren't restrictions on full attendance. Also issue of cost of tickets, price of petrol etc with rising cost of living. At least it's a decent time for anyone getting public transport or bringing kids. Either way should have decent support for only guaranteed home knock-out game up to now.

A birdy is saying no DoR. That is a mistake, if true. Too much work for a guy who's just starting in the position for the first time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,269 ✭✭✭Must love hardship

I wouldn't say Howley would be the most inspiring appointment but he is going to need some experienced coaches around him too. Additional coaches will be available post world cup too..

Id imagine Ian Costello will be on the ticket which would be great considering his knowledge of the acemedy players coming through and there was talk of the NZ 7's coach Clark Laidlaw too. A young irish forwards coach could learn alot from Rowntree if they got on the ticket like o'Brien, Coughlan, muldoon or Don Ryan.

Rowntree is a coach for about 15 years now, he's coached at club, international (England & Georgia), B&I Lions and has been with Munster since 2019. He doesn't lack experience. But if we need another experienced coach on the ticket it won't be Howley.

I think that the IRFU should try and get an Irish coach back from abroad and coaching in Ireland.

Did Flanagan not say at some stage that there would be a DOR? Or was there just loads of speculation?
