Yep, of course, tons, they don't have any technical problems that are jarring. The design suits the tech perfectly.

I still think Chrono Cross is worth playing, and being turn based it's not too jarring (if a little headache inducing after a while). I'll be giving the remaster a bash since I bounced off it hard back in the day. But I agree with the sentiment. For instance most non-nintendo game son the N64 are so hard to go back to because of awful performance issues. Goldeneye is a travesty and I just can't enjoy it whereas the lesser regarded Turok I find a lot of fun still because it has a framerate that isn't criminal.

Supermassive have released a video showing 30 mins of The Quarry for those interested. Not something I'd want to watch personally if I was at all interested in playing the game.

So going to spend a while with a few recent indies after being engrossed by Elden Ring for a month. First up is Norco:

It's stunning so far. A surreal point n click game set in areas around suburban New Orleans. It's very funny, but also surprisingly sad as it probes the disaffection of the characters and the pollution-destroyed world around them. There's beautiful and unusual artwork alongside some of the sharpest, most poetic writing I've encountered in a game since Disco Elysium.

Some of the videos Im seeing of that Kirby online are hilarious, Im going to have to give it a go after Elden Ring.

The Quarry, (Until Dawn Spiritual Successor), Has A "Movie Mode" Where It's Literally A Movie With No Gameplay

The catch, you can predetermine the personalities of the cast beforehand. There's also variants of this mode where everyone lives or everyone dies. As such you can literally turn this game into a ten hour long movie with tons of permutations.

Currently playing Ori and the Blind Forest. I'm at the Ginso tree where the water is rising and you have to escape it. It seems as though you need to execute a perfect run of quick reflex platforming to get past it. One mistake and you die. Breaking my heart.

    Great game though.

Trying again this evening. No joy. It just never seems to end. If there's one thing that will turn me off a game is doing the same section over and over and over. I've no patience for that anymore.

Edit: annnd I deleted the game. I'll stay away from these types of games I think.

I really liked the music for that section which helped me tolerate constantly dying. Think that was the part I found the hardest in the whole game.

It's so frustrating because I really loved the game until that point. It was challenging, but fair. But that section feels like the game is just punishing me for playing it.

I honestly got through that area easily. I only played it not so long ago. You do know you can save the game in spots where you stand still. So you do not have to repeat the same thing over and over.

I tried to save it, it said you can't save in a "dangerous area". I mean it makes sense, you could create a save in an area that you can't avoid dying in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,308 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

I forgot about that but both those Ori games are good so I recommend going back to it. There is an auto save at least in the section when you get half way up. I just rewatched a guy doing it and he could save. You cannot save every where alright.

    I wasn't even halfway? 😂

I'll give it a good break and come back fresh. Hopefully I can do a save somewhere.

I loved those Ori games. I usually have no time or patience for "git gud" hard sections in games especially where they are blantantly unfair. But I managed ok in both games, so I don't consider the Ori games like some dark souls hell games. Great sense of achievement after completing them. The 2nd game is fairer, so much more polished and balanced than the first. Shorter escape sections and some great bosses too.

For the escape sections you need to focus and don't forget to inhale/exhale. Also treat it as N sections rather than 1 long section 👍

Also you can tailor your power ups so that you can do dashes and up to 3 somersaults in the air. All of which help a lot.

I'm going to dip into Sleeping Dogs again, for karaoke, massages and more importantly, pork buns.

I only played a few minutes of that game years ago. Do you recommend I go back to it?

I saw that Shadowrun Trilogy may be coming to consoles. Is there any chance at all these are like the original Snes game? I'd love to play that again.

I haven't played it in a good while, but I replayed it a couple of times. Great game. Was like a fun GTA with better melee combat. I think I played the Definitive Edition when it released on PS4. IIRC, it holds up.

That tree is a noted difficulty spike, and indeed Id say its the hardest of the escape sequences - i dont know why they never patched it as it was the subject of heaps of criticism. If you do get pass it, you'll have hours of great platforming again afterwards, so its worth sticking with it.

Finished Norco the other day. It really is quite a special game - I'd put it up there with Kentucky Route Zero and Disco Elysium in terms of the quality of writing, and all the visual & sound design really complements that. There's some light puzzle elements but it's mostly just fun to poke around the world and discover the strange secrets and characters within it.

It's quite short - probably around 4-5 hours - and on PC Game Pass (or quite cheap on Steam etc...) so would really recommend it to anyone who likes more surreal, narrative-driven games.

Gave Hitman 3 a go on series X and game pass. Not for me. Didn't click ...

Repeat with Mass Effect 1 Legendary edition, and you know it's got a lot of atmosphere and the music is good. I like it.

I think music has a huge effect on me in games, maybe moreso than graphics. It really sets the tone for the whole experience, and it doesn't date or need some expensive tech.

Well played a bit of this this evening it is actually a good game once you get to grips with it. The Xbox had my old save so I didn't have to start from the very beginning but I don't think I was far into it. It's all about pressing Y at the right time. I still haven't mastered it yet so I still get hit from time to time but not as bad as when I continued on earlier this evening.

I beat it eventually and then gave up on the game. There's no need for that sort of torture, no need at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,308 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

It depends on the person. I found both Ori games to be easy even the hard sections but found Batman Arkham knight to be a chore. I was playing at normal difficulty and should have turned it down a notch. I'm currently playing Sleeping Dogs and getting my ass handed to me doing a drug bust where you fight a bunch of enemies and then hack the camera. I can handle the first lot then more show up and I die and it is kinda frustrating. As I said above Ori was easy for me but Knight and Sleeping dogs I find to be challenging. You probably found those two game to be easy.

I don't know how anyone could have done that section on their first attempt. It requires a lot of memorisation, perfect timing of jumps, etc.

It took me hundreds of attempts. It was torture but I felt so defeated that I just had to keep going back to beat it. The euphoria when I did it was unreal. But that was it, I wasn't going any further. In my mind I completed the game even though I know it was only half way!

I got as far as the very, very first wolf thing in ori 2. It could even have been still in the tutorial, that early. And I said nah, no way not again.

The whole its cool to make your game ridiculously hard thing is just stupid.

And nope, I haven't touch Elden Ring. I don't care how good the story is I'm not dying 500 times to get through a game.

You could be onto something there. The games you mention would be more my thing and I will shredd you up in COD, which I know there are many people who find it near impossible to play.

Each to their own and all that. I loved the 2 Ori games, in my top 10. Apparantly they did patch the Ginso tree, and while I found it initially frustrating, I was enjoying it at the end. I don't remember it being impossible hard, but I do remember people saying how hard that section was and I didn't think the same.

Elden Ring, I gave a good few hours to, no story to speak of and just more Dark Souls with an open world. Not for me. Loved the Arkham games, but no intention of doing the challenges.

I think people are too stuck on playing the hardest mode available. Games are meant to be enjoyable, and everyone gets joy from a different place. Some love the satisfaction of beating something after hundreds of tries, whereas to me that's not worth it. I'm all about the entire experience, and repeating the same thing over and over will eventually put me off, some moreso than others. But I stuck with the Ori games. A mate recently played through the first, on my profile but on PC (he got a €2k gaming laptop!). At the end, he said he died 800+ times, and checked the Xbox version and I had died ~340 times. But I collected everything, so was more powerful in general than his run.
