Politicians, as advised by Public Health experts, aren't saying they don't make any difference. They're just saying they're not justified in the current situation. High risk places for transmission are homes, and pubs/ restaurants/ clubs where people are eating and drinking so won't be wearing them anyway. They're still advised in other high risk circumstances (such as Public Transport), just not mandated. As population, we seem incapable of comprehending that things aren't black and white/ good or bad.

I thought all asylum seekers/refugees (not sure which status) were to be granted their OWN DOOR accommodation after a few months in DP. Can't be selective now can we, so I take it that ALL Ukrainians will eventually fall under the same umbrella. Mary and Pat meanwhile can't move out of Mammy's house to their own door accommodation, ever.

Better not to be born in this country at all it seems.

To be fair the situation with Ukraine is drastic for the people while not ideal your Mary and Pat at least have somewhere to live .Most Ukrainians will leave at the first chance they get but that could be a while even if the war finished soon .

I'll just say this , why weren't existing refugees offered their Own Door , years ago and yet Ukrainians offered an Open Door immediately, along with all the other benefits that existing refugees can only dream of.

My point simply , all refugees should be treated equally and wether or not people agree, over night and with the stroke of a pen , a Two Tier and blatant discriminatory refugee system was introduced with not a second given to its implications, let alone the lack of infrastructure in place.

Well I think (rightly or wrongly) that there was the impression that a large number of asylum seekers were/are chancers and are in fact economic migrants who would not be eligible to immigrate here without a work visa. Anyway that is moot now since MOJ is granting residency status to the vast majority of asylum seekers/refugees already in the system here under an amnesty.

The Ukrainians on the other hand are visibly escaping a war situation that is desperate and authentic. UN is supporting war refugees AFAIK, and we are doing our bit.

I was not referring only to Ukrainians, but ALL asylum seekers/refugees. I have no issue with us helping Ukraine under the refugee program, but as others have said there was no plan by Government before agreeing to limitless numbers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,200 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

I think it's fair to say there was some chancers but I'm actually referring to refugees actually brought here, Syrians, Iraqis and yemini, not refugees who landed etc , I do get your point however.

But even beyond this and you've only got to look at the DEASP twitter feed to see people who ligitmately arrived here on valid work permits waiting weeks and months for PPSN and that's just one example of were priorities are clearly not focused.

I reiterate again, equal treatment for all .

It is to Pat's eternal shame that he supports the narrative that "poor Irish people are all racists and so don't deserve a government that provides housing". (The only thing he's really still good for is loading up the Cash Machine, atta boy Pat.)

Oh and Luke O'Neill's volte-face ditching long Covid (not so many headlines now) for loading medical supplies into the back of a van has he heads off to the warzone. Oh for the love of god. I bet his wife is happy he's out of the house though ;-)

I d gladly pay him costs if its a one way ticket. He can bring that walkabout plastic bubble he showcased on the scare byrne show a while back. If it it could keep out the covid it can keep out the russkies..no bother.

That in a nutshell is the First and Greatest Commandment of the liberal religion. Since they're irredeemable they must be replaced with imported stock more amenable to herd control. Driving up rents....well that's a bonus....er no I mean ... regrettable. Shure didn't entire families live in a room with a shared jacks out the back. ..back in the day. Twas grand....and twould help meet the climate goals too.

You both have words in quotation marks that PK never said.

You are entitled to your opinions but misrepresentation is a different thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 568 ✭✭✭72sheep

I'm not too worried about getting a solicitors letter... Structurally I just casually used the entire defining clause as the snappy name for the narrative (which Pat supports). My comment does not attribute those words to Pat. However one might argue that your comment then does misrepresent my comment ;-)

I think we can safely skip the legal process.

If he didn't say it what makes you think he supports it.

By the way, I don't think PK supports that narrative at all.

    Anton in for Pat today.

I think it should be a permananent change and let Pat do a day at the weekend.

The last few weeks have shown Pat needs a break from broadcasting 5 days a week.

I've only just woken up, and I've already heard ads for a headphones competition, a competition for a giant American fridge, and I presume that stupid money giveaway is still on the go.

It's turning into the shopping channel!

They must be making a fortune on that cash machine thing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,164 ✭✭✭✭whisky_galore

It's crass when they try to segue the cash machine in with pieces on the increases in costs of living, fuel and rent. Tired old joke at this stage.

as nice as the 'cash machine' would be nice to win, I think they are making a fortune off it. The money does not be long adding up if you were entering daily

Hmm, judging by the heaps of rubbish left by Generation Greta after the weekend, I fear they're no different to their elders.

I wonder is Pat semi retired now, it seems he's off every few weeks now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 23,248 ✭✭✭✭2smiggy

hard to know, he may have a few extra holidays available to him after the last few years. Grand to head out to Portugal every few months !!

He often used to be off whenever Sean O'Rourke was as lathair. Now, Duffy is on a breakeen and Pat is off as well. Just saying, like 🙂

Hard to believe he is 74.

Some man for his age with a great career to look back on.

Time to be slowing down perhaps.

Young Anton has the ball at his feet, a very able replacement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,164 ✭✭✭✭whisky_galore

Anton is a good presenter, shame about his mammy and her company with its tentacles everywhere in Irish media, just reinforces the jobs for the boys stereotype.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,113 ✭✭✭Technocentral

The day Pat leaves I'm switching off Irish radio for good, I've zero interest in any of his replacements.
