Will shouting keep my wife's f#cking name out of your mouth twice or thrice to Chris was worse than the hit imho, no mention of her condition

He was favourite to win so not too surprising

Is it the red round table Jada presents, she may invite both Will and Chris on together

Will didn't want to be seen spitting but laying a "smackdown" and cursing wasn't bad 😁

Damage limitation from Smith but probably too little too late.

I doubt he expected to be coming off worse than Rock from this incident.

This fellow is very foolish and simple, the joke was not a big deal, little Willy

Ironic how annoyed Smith got about a man having his wife's name in his mouth but could care less about his wife having so many men in hers.

Do posters still think this was scripted?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,981 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Of course. Because "Well I don't think Chris Rock would have reacted like that" somehow trumps Will Smith crying after it, no comedic payoff, no benefit to it for anyone involved, Chris Rock being condemned by some due to his joke, Will Smith apologising to the Academy during his speech, Will Smith now apologising directly to Chris Rock, the LAPD saying they're willing to investigate if Chris Rock wants to press charges, the Academy saying they condemn what happened, the Academy saying they're going to investigate what happened, nobody involved coming forward to say "Hold on, don't worry, this was just a planned bit, didn't come off as we expected, sorry", and Will Smith possibly having tanked his career on what should have been the biggest night of his career.

My understanding of the way that the Oscars work is that nothing is randomly picked, everything is submitted for consideration by the producers (for a fee, natch). The nominees are then shortlisted from those that have been submitted.

In Encanto's case, We Don't Talk About Bruno was a bit of a surprise hit, it wasn't supposed to be the big song, and afaik Disney submitted a different song but didn't get the nomination.

I do not think the Smith/Rock slap was scripted. Will has for the past few years developed a reputation for having an ego that can be seriously over the top. That was evident on the night. Smith might find his place in Hollywood fast expiring as others found out, it's an unforgiving place.

    Dan.

Watching one of the US talk show channels last night on my tricky box, commentators saying that presenters do have to run their jokes past the organisers beforehand, so they knew the gag about Bordem/Smith was coming. Another reason why there is no expected fallout for Smith.

Bill Crystal is potentially a controversial choice, he may insist on doing black face again.

    Third question;

“Will you be ok with a guy who has targeted your wife before, making fun of her disease”

and it is interesting that anyone that raises questions is labelled a 'conspiracy theorist' by the mainstream sheeple quickly ...

the snowflakes will make sure Ricky Gervais never hosts anything ever again........

There will be controlled scripts now, with nice soothing , lemon fragranced , calming context in all links, as you cannot offend the continually offended anymore...

    poor little snowflakes...

they should take the Oscar off him, bar him and the wife from Hollywood for life and give the Oscar to the deaf actor from CODA. Some sort of justice.

What's the difference between another man's d*ck and another mans joke??

G.I. Jada can take one, but not the other.

No he didn't, he laughed at the joke. If your going to be offended fair enough, but Will knows he's wife has alopecia and Chris allegedly doesn't.

It's a double whammy for Will.

You can be sure that the joke / insult chris rock made was well known in advance by the producers of the show, nothing in these shows is off the cuff.

whats sad about that is the oscars reducing themselves to gutter like personal insults like the emmys to try and be popular, and as bad as ricky is he doesnt trade on peoples misery for laughs, Giving the oscars the comedy central roast approach is the pity and they will regret it in time.

It lacks class, and devalues the oscars itself in a big way.

Mel Gibson might disagree with you about Ricky Gervais.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,871 ✭✭✭EltonJohn69

People are bringing Ricky Gervais into this a lot. Can someone name or post a joke that Ricky did at the golden globes that is as bad as the Chris Rock alopecia joke ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,422 ✭✭✭trashcan

Expect an apology from Chris Rock as the next scene in this drama, possibly with the claim that he was unaware of the alopecia issue. Smiths apology is no doubt as a result of PR advice, and Rocks will be the same. If Smith was genuinely sorry he would have apologised to Rock in his speech, which was cringeworthingly (is that a word ?) awful btw.

"Gervais poked fun at Olympic decathlon champion-turned-Hollywood celebrity Caitlyn Jenner, a pioneer for transgender rights by speaking publicly about her gender change but who was also involved in a deadly car crash last year.

"What a year she's had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes.

"She didn't do a lot for women drivers, but you can't have everything, can you?" Gervais said to applause."

Someone might say making light of an incident involving the death of someone is worse than saying that Jada Smith looks a bit like GI Jane with her shaved head.

“Honestly, I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.”

“Listen, I still feel a bit bad for it,” he told the crowd. “Mel’s forgotten all about it, apparently. That’s what drinking does.”

“He has done all those films,” Gervais said, “but many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford clinic and Los Angeles County Jail.” - About Robert Downey Jr

Some would argue making fun of people because of their serious addictions is a little worse than mentioning that Jada Pinkett Smith looks a bit like GI Jane with her shaved head.
