No idea - don't know the in's and outs of his business affairs but just watching the clip of the slap its screams fake.

Granted the shout up at the stage after the fact seems legit but had really connected I think Rock would have been more unsettled in his stance. He walked towards will and almost braced himself.

Just my opinion on what I have seen - couldn't really give to F's for these type pf people. not my thing.

Just my take on it. I agree the shouting looked genuine but the slap didn't.

Like all conspiracy theories, the onus is on the people alleging that it was faked or staged to provide some concrete evidence that it was.

In the meantime, the abundance of evidence currently available points to the conclusion that, no, it was not staged :)

It so was not. Makes 0 sense to stage something like that....what for?

Staged or not who cares, the whole incident is a storm in a teacup.

The Academy Awards must be delighted, their ratings will be boosted dramatically.

Using the “f” word on national tv here is a no no!

the fact they cut it out but you could still see him say F***, was hilarious.

this wasn’t staged, this was Jada getting her knickers in a twist. Ordering her more famous husband to do something, and it went downhill from there.

he knew he was in crap hence the tears.

I think Rock was leaning in towards Will because he thought he was going to say/whisper something to him. As for Smith not fully connecting with the slap, that doesn't mean it was fake, it just means he didn't fully connect.

Again, there was no benefit to anyone with what happened, no joke at the end, no payoff.... nothing good came out of it for anyone involved. Nor would anyone have thought it was a good idea. No reason for Will Smith to agree to do it. There's also a clip of him in the break after where he's being comfroted by Denzel Washinton and others and is drying his eyes as he's been crying.

Saying the slap looks staged and then ignoring all the context and everything else that happened is just nonsense.

Rock anticipated (and naturally so) that the man approaching him with purpose was possibly going to do something, hence Rock kind of rode some of the slap. The slap/strike was in no way staged/fake...Smith did what he intended with meaning.

They brought back Stanley Kubrick to stage the whole thing, since he did such a good job on the moon landing.

No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change this World

We will never really find out the truth I feel.

Easiest way to keep face is if they agree to say its staged, everyone comes out intact from it.

The idea out there that it was fake because he would have punched not slapped if he was genuine. Good god what a stupid line of thinking.

That was a career ending move by Will Smith. He'll find that none of the majors like Disney, Netflix, Warner bros, Sony etc will touch him with a barge pole from now on

People have been sued for less.

'Had' will smith assaulted chris rock the amount of money on the line would be ridiculous. The Pay out for the physical damage and the public embarrassment caused would prob be 100million plus. Sounds stupid but this is hollywood where everything is stupid.

Each to their own but for me it was a fake slap - everything else that happened afterwards is open to debate but not the slap or lack their of.

Lot of class there. Assault someone on live TV, shout all kinds at him, and party like nothing happened.

Hope he has to hand that Oscar back.

this is the problem - he's so out of touch with reality he doesn't realise what he's done or how he's perceived.

his sense of entitlement is disgusting, he thinks he can do whatever he wants.

Chris Rock was asked by police if he wanted to press charges against Smith, but he said no.

That question never even would have reached him if it was staged.

Edit: The LAPD even released a statement on it:

The LAPD confirmed on Monday that Rock declined to file a police report.

"LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program," the department told CNN in a statement. "The incident involved one individual slapping another. The individual involved has declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report."

So the LAPD themselves have confirmed it was a slap and therefore an actual incident, not a faked/staged event.

Only if Rock pressed charges, he said he won’t. Had Smith responded in that way to the piss being taken out of himself, he would be in trouble. The fact that Rock took the piss out of his wife’s illness puts a whole different slant on it, the woman’s/disabilities discrimination lobbies would line up squarely behind Smith.

And you believe everything you read online. Statement released by an agent more than likely

I edited my post before reading this to include a statement from the LAPD. I assume you're not going to suggest that they're in on it too.

I'll stick with my original assumption and move on with life,

So, partly staged...how can this be partly staged....either it is staged or not....

The slap was staged, but the rest may not have been.....how is this sense?

Entitled millionaire celebrity doesn't think that laws or common manners applies to him so proceeds to assault a smaller harmless fella.

Why are people that surprised really?

OK, can we put to bed that it was staged.

    It was not staged.

    A) there is phone footage from the press gallery upstairs, taken by controllers and reporters filming the aftermath in the next ad break, the commentary and the assistants scurrying about and the people taking Smith aside to talk to him off camera, it's clear nobody there considered it staged.

    B) if it was staged, what was the point of it? What entertainment value or point to be made came from such a contrived incident? Absolutely none.

    C) if it was to have been staged, that means it would have had to be included in the production design and editorial. And while admittedly, the Academy did allow some desperate shyte to pass as entertainment in the show, there's no way they would have sanctioned an assault and a rant, in any circumstances. Because, back to point B above, what possible value would it add, what point would it be making?

It wasn't staged. It was a truly bizarre and outrageous spontaneous moment. Both parties at fault. People's families are out of bounds and also you don't belt people.
