Any help for OAP?

My Dad is 82 and I am wondering is there any services available for him to say have someone come out and cut the grass once or twice a month ? He is not really able to do it himself and I am not always around to do it. Someone mentioned to me that there is a package available for such circumstances ?

Hi, I'm not honestly aware of such package or support from a benefits point of view but did a quick search on age action website and they have such a service. I'm unsure if it's location specific but I certainly think worth contacting them on behalf of your dad .

Sometimes the local Community Centre operates a service to help out the elderly in the Parish. Might be worth a call to them?

This is why I'd like to see some level of Community Service work being part of receiptn of long term unemployment payments.

It'd be a win win...People who need help get help, and people with some spare time get to contribute.

Op...I think you're best bet is doing as much as you can yourself and maybe knocking in to your Dads neighbours and see if they have a teenager who could use a few quid every other Saturday.

My mother is nearly 88 living on her own and the idea of a random gentleman landing down at the house to cut the grass is so alarming and reckless I can’t think of anything worse.

If you call Citizens Info they get traning on everything and can give information on where to apply. They will know about the loop holes for benefits too

I know that the people in my local community centre who provide this service are all garda vetted.

The suggestion that I was responding to was that people on JSA should be deployed to pensioners to do minor household maintenance. The people at your community centre are volunteers and not only that but they are vetted.

Most of the recipients of JSA would not be volunteering for this for many different reasons and will probably be back in employment by the time the vetting comes through
