430d is going fine. It's not getting a huge amount of use these days though due to wfh.

Used 2021 (211) BMW 3 Series 330i M Sport Pro Edition Saloon in Dublin (carzone.ie)

A lovely spec low mileage 330i here. I'm betting it is ex BMW head office.

    Love the upgraded leather.

That's a fairly nice car alright. Wouldn't be gone on the black wheels myself but they sort of fit in with the rest of the black exterior pro bits I guess. Video had a asking price of 69k and advert has it down to 59k now. Not the worst price given there were a few 2019 recently advertising mid 40s. Being realistic, its hard to know if spending that sort of money on a petrol car like that is prudent unfortunately going forward.

I normally don't like black alloys but with the oxide grey, they work very well.

It's terrible to have to say it, but in the context of where prices are now it's not expensive for what it is. At 69k it was nuts but at 59k it is ok.

I wouldn't worry about buying a petrol car like this as it will be an enthusiasts choice for a few years yet.

Maybe it’s the light but the oxide grey looks suspiciously like the metallic beige retirees spec for their E class and the red interior doesn’t look to match it well at all 😳

    is the 330i still a straight 6?

    Ah Jaysus really

hardly the enthusiasts choice then? Nice spec and all but feck that

What do people think is a fair price for a 2021 545e with 25,000km that is about €100k new, has a few packs on it? They are pretty hard to get, but not sure what the value of one would be in another 1 to 2 years. The 530e generally lose their value pretty quickly as there used to be plenty of them available from the UK but that pipeline has really slowed down.

I keep thinking of Colm Quinn and their 2018 540i for €70k, which seems like a crazy price.

The 330i is the enthusiasts choice in a world of plug in cars hybrid and full electric.

It is reckoned by many to be the sweet spot in the 3 series range.

it’s got enough power to make it quick enough and handling is considered to be excellent as it’s well balanced as no batteries or heavy six pot engine.

Fuel economy is good and road tax reasonable in Ireland.

I'd agree with carsfan2. In a world of limited offerings and emission strangulations on ICE cars, the 330i is the pick of the 3 Series range. The M340i and M3 are obviously way better but your into a different league altogether there and I'd say those will probably be on the endangered list in their current form going forward too.

I know a 7 Series depreciates at a much higher rate than a 5 Series but they also cost more brand new.

This fairly basic 2021 745e is asking 90k which might give you a small idea all the same: https://www.carsireland.ie/2913507

Or this higher spec one from a BMW dealer for 96k: https://www.carsireland.ie/3053163

if owning a 4 pot bmw now makes you an enthusiast times have changed obviously, seems more like an anything but electric bias than anything else. I’ve owned more than a half dozen 6 cyl BMWs and I don’t ever remember fuel economy or tax being a major consideration for the enthusiast.

The 330i is only 1525 kilos and has rear wheel drive. Yes it's lost two cylinders but it's still the same weight more or less as an e46 or e90 330i, that's no mean achievement considering its about 7-8 inches longer than those cars. The 340i is much heavier (though still way lighter than an i4) and only has xDrive.

Not saying the 340i is a bad car or anything like that but can definitely see the appeal of the 330i for anyone who likes driving and handling. Much cheaper to buy and obviously cheaper to tax, too.

I would definitely love to try both of them and see what they're like.

Is enthusiast mainly defined by the number of cylinders though? For example would a Golf R owner be defined as not being an enthusiast because its a 4 banger?

Have to disagree with your point Cyrus. You can be an enthusiast and be conscious of costs. We all have different income levels and circumstances, you have to cut your cloth accordingly. Ireland is a tough country to be a car enthusiast financially, we're penalised once we start moving into more interesting stuff.

I'm an enthusiast and I take tax into account. €600-750 is pretty much my threshold. I could pay more but I don't want to. There are plenty of fun cars in the market at and under that tax threshold.

Fuel economy is not so much an issue for me these days as my milage has dropped dramatically, however in the past it was a factor, as I could do 30-40k KMs per year easily.

Being an enthusiast doesn't mean you have to be blind to costs, for me and I'm sure many people, it's about finding a balance between enjoyment and responsible/manageable spend.

im more against the rhetoric that anyone buying an ev or hybrid isn’t an enthusiast where the buyer of a 330i is. I know all about the reality of owning the more ‘exotic’ stuff I paid maximum road tax more years than I care to remember. But the reality is when this car is 5 years old the enthusiasts aren’t going to be hunting this out it’ll be a 340 or an m3/4 , this will just be a moderately powerful 3 series with an engine that’s not particularly special, same as a 330e.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,909 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

They are a golf enthusiast for sure, they don’t have a 6cyl option though, the trend tends to be or tended to be that people went from fast vws to faster 6cyl BMWs or to Porsches of some sort .

the reality is the best BMWs have never been the 4 cylinder ones and now just because they are ice they are the enthusiast choice. I don’t buy it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,582 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Remember the Golf vr6 became a Golf R and lost 2 cylinders in the process but has lower running costs (in this country anyway) while having actually more power. I don't think it makes the R owner any less of an enthusiast than the vr6 owner to be honest.

I also don't disagree that BMW 4 cylinder engines are the best but this is the world we live in now and these are the cars that enthusiasts who still want an ICE car have to chose from. As someone said earlier, car enthusiasts also have to live in the real world and they buy what they see as affordable to them, irrespective of what mode of propulsion the car has.

the r32 came in between but I know what you mean, but as I said an r doesn’t tend to be the end destination in the journey.

an enthusiast will more likely buy a used what they want than a new something else . I still can’t see a 4 pot 330 being sought after in 5 years time by enthusiasts but I may well be wrong.

I agree, it’s not an enthusiast type car (still a very nice car though). It’s a nice 3 series with a moderately powerful engine, but as mentioned before that’s as good as it usually gets in Ireland. It’s also just the times we live in.

I had a Golf VR6 over 20 years ago and it was a lovely thing. It made the nicest noise and was full of character but a diesel golf would leave it for dead now. That’s progress. In saying that I’d a couple of Golf R’s too and they are so far from a VR6 as to be almost incomparable. They don’t sound great either but again that’s progress!

I suppose I’m a car enthusiast but it’s getting harder and harder to get thrills from cars in Ireland.

These days every new car launch is an EV or hybrid and that’s progress too.

Which diesel golf would leave a VR6 for dead. Only one I'd think would be a GTD. I don't think a standard diesel golf would.

Honestly dose the BMW CEO come into every new model design meeting now and say:

It won’t look like that. The grill will be more offensive. The details won’t be as bad as that though.

Following on from our previous discussion about what would appeal to an enthusiast, I think it is safe to say that car definitely is one for the enthusiast!

Your average punter wouldn't know what an Alpina model is. I think BMW actually bought them out last week so they will be a sub brand.

I am not sure I like the quad exhausts or the wood interior myself but I imagine it is a cracking car to drive.

It’s lovely alright but it’s a diesel. Fast but not really fun.
