"You can easily make that back" I would love to know how many people are in profit on this forum never mind easily making 10k. There is a reason most posters don't stay around for long on here...

Slightly off topic, but the term grabbed my attention.

What is a "very cheap" rental property?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,235 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

Well I didn't want to make it such a big position but half of my investment is in baba because my initial position was at 240 or something. So I averaged down allll last year. Now I have 124 shares at 188.

If I was break even on baba I'd be up 13%. When I go back to monthly investing its brk all the way.

90k south Wexford 3bed, and spent afew quid more doing it up. I only highlighted "cheap" because I don't want to make it out that I'm casually diversifying a huge portfolio into like a 300k rental properties lol, hopefully in the future but certainly not now 😅. The funny thing actually, when I was in my bank transfering the money to my solicitor the bank staff wrote down "house deposit" lol.

I mean losing 10k isn't going to ruin his life. Sounds like the original poster was averaging in all year so saving that amount up again doesn't sound impossible, and his pf is already 2-3 times that. It's a tough loss, no doubt, but it's definitely recoverable.

Don't let the "lost" money cloud your mind, making you think you have to make that back. Think of it as starting afresh with what you have now and build from there. Sounds like you have a plan for now, best of luck with it

When I bought BABA is was for the long term anyway, so I'm not flustered.

I was listening to the mywallst podcast (thanks for recommend). Was interesting how they said on most stocks they have they will have been down at some stage. It's very refreshing to see how much they ignore short term noise and really just focus on long term. Also the portfolio sizes was interesting. Over 25 they were saying just is too much to track. Started a small position in Teladoc after listening to that episode friday....and yes already down;) ...but they convinced me. They also put Etsy on my radar now!

Thanks. Nice price for bricks mortar with the 10% return.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,235 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

I dipped my toe in 2020 but probably 80% of my investment has been in 2021. If I was break even on BABA I'd be up 14%.

What is the consensus outlook for the week ahead? Russia / Ukraine stability or progress of same would bring a good bump to the indices.

My view is things still being sold down and more drops coming, keeping my powder dry for now but will add more SHOP, Nike and Disney in the near future

Hang Seng on course for it's worst one day drop since 2008...

    It's 15% below it's Covid trough.

Property companies in China dropping bigly too. Country Garden Holdings (employs 100k) is down over 18% today alone. Sunac, also down similarly. These are big big drops.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,235 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

Another BABA slaughter today. Getting hard to stomach these drops.

Overall portfolio now down over 15%.

Sorry to hear about those looses. I'd say you're not the only one in that situation. Looking at the price today (in the late 70's!), it surely looks like a good investment so hold tight and hopefully it turns around for you.

I got into BABA at 227 but lost faith and sold at 142. At the time, after making a pretty hefty loss, I was happy never to look at it again but my head is turning again now that it has almost down 50% on my selling price!

What is going on witih 4D pharma?? Up 50% in just a few days.

I'm in and out of Baba since 2018, sold half my holding at the beginning of Nov at $165 when I was still in the green, in the red with it now but not too bad. Haven't gone near it since as I havent been keeping an eye on it really, but really tempted to go back in now as it nears $80.

I am down 64% on LMND, that donkey looks like it will never stop dropping.

It's not just BABA down though (down 65%) second biggest e-comm company in China is JD.com (down 50%) then third biggest is Pinduoduo (down 80%)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,618 ✭✭✭Shedite27

Yeah the current China issue is a potential delisting of Chinese companies. Unlikely I'd imagine but enough to spook the market nonetheless

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,235 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

BABA up 19% pre market. It went up 27% in HK. It's back to last Fridays prices 🤣

Another 5 days like this and I'll be break even 😜

Up over 8% for the day. Let's hope JPOW doesn't say something that will cause a collapse later.

Was down 15% before today, now down 8.5%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,372 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Portfolio up 5+%, but really only back where I was less than 2 weeks ago!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭ocallagh

I purchased some more JP Morgan Asia Growth & Income (JAGI.L), and some Scottish Mortgage (SMT.L) this morning. It's high risk right now, and they may easily drop further, but I think medium to long term these prices will look relatively cheap

Up in 48 out of 51 stocks today, just Northland Power (NPI.TO), Kenmare (KMR.L) and Cameco (CCJ) marginally down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,251 ✭✭✭massdebater

Nice one!! 36% jump today for BABA! Back to where it was last week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,940 ✭✭✭DeanAustin

Someone mentioned it on here around 9 months ago when the price soared to $16 from $8 and subsequently tanked to below $2 in the space of a week but GOED is one to watch. I’m in balls deep because the fundamentals are solid, it’s trading at ridiculous price to sales and price to earning ratios and there are some huge plans in the works including a rebrand. The CEO is in for a million dollars at an average price at about 50% above where it is at the moment and there is a buyback programme in the offing. I’m underwater at the moment by a good amount but I’m not worried because the stock is heavily manipulated. That’ll only be the case for so long.

They issued warrants last year to do a massive acquisition which are helping keep the stock down but at some stage this will fly. It might take months or a couple of years but there is an opportunity here to make serious money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,319 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Thats an interesting one thanks, might have to grab a few on Monday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,940 ✭✭✭DeanAustin

Obviously nothing is risk free but any expert I've read reckons this will fly over the next few months/years. I've been in for 9 months and it can be frustrating if you want a quick buck but I'm in it for the long haul. Good article here on small cap investments by Greystone. Most of it is the guy describing his methodology and why small caps are a great opportunity because of mispricing sometimes. Towards the end of the article, he outlines why he thinks GOED is a winner.

Maybe consider putting half of it into Berkshire, as it has decent exposure to different sectors and is well managed and stable, plus there's a history of them doing decently in bear markets (which I believe is coming). Then pick 3 or 4 high quality profitable companies (Alphabet, Microsoft, Visa, etc). Don't pick Apple if you buy Berkshire though.

    Good luck.
