I'm going to try pumpkin muffins but its hard to find tinned pumpkin in my local Dublin supermarkets so I was thinking of trying mashed Butternut Squash instead. If anyone has tried this I'd like to know what you thought of the taste, or would Sweet Potato be a better alternative, or has anyone got any other recommendations.

I’ve used both. Butternut squash is probably the most similar to pumpkin taste wise. I usually roast mine off and then scoop out the flesh and then drain out the water with some cheesecloth and that’s the kind of what you’d get from a can. Hope this helps.

If any supermarkets around you have an American section or International foods type area, you might find tinned pumpkin there. But otherwise, yeah, either of the ones you mentioned would be fine. Pumpkin is actually exceptionally bland so I’d tend to go for sweet potato because it’s a bit more interesting, but butternut squash would be more closely related.

Thanks for the replies. I've never tasted pumpkin but if its bland then probably not worth the bother or expense. I've roasted butternut squash before when making soup so might try that first.
