Resealing bathroom - what are these seals?

    Hi,

    Went to reseal the bath only to find it wasn't silicone that was used but some sort of seals embedded in the grout (see photo) . I've no idea of what they are and what I should be doing here to reseal the bath. The shower tray is in a bad state (starting to look discolored) and needs work done also but has the same type of seals at the edges. Had thought I could rip out the old silicone and run new stuff but now it's looking like a bigger job :( any advice on how to our this is much appreciated.
