Resealing bathroom - what are these seals?

Hi,

Went to reseal the bath only to find it wasn't silicone that was used but some sort of seals embedded in the grout (see photo) . I've no idea of what they are and what I should be doing here to reseal the bath. The shower tray is in a bad state (starting to look discolored) and needs work done also but has the same type of seals at the edges. Had thought I could rip out the old silicone and run new stuff but now it's looking like a bigger job :( any advice on how to our this is much appreciated.

Silicone would be a major step backwards compared to what is already in place. If a tray is installed correctly & the walls tiled correctly then no silicone will be needed. The only silicone in my shower is the outside of the door frame. Absolutely no silicone inside the cubicle itself

Personally I'd leave well enough alone unless it's leaking

what you have is an under tile seal similar to above which was put on wall before tiles , because they have an upstand you would have to remove tiles to get it off.
