Just took a look there again now and I can see them. Zoomed out a bit. Will have to give it another trial run next time. Thanks.

Didn't manage to charge at Ionity in Cashel today - the cable wouldn't quite fit :pac:.

I did notice the spaces badly need to be repainted though & plenty of dingbats in ICE'd cars using them as normal parking .

They could be painted pink with yellow polka dots and the dingbats would still use them.

Is your 530e not and ICE car though?

It's an electrically propelled, self charging, plug in hybrid, mile muncher, with a turbo charged petrol engine, so yes, an ICE.
I just wanted to post a picture of it here while it was clean & craftily integrated it into the Ionity thread :pac:.

No BEVs appeared while I took the pic & no one was charging on the eCars charger either, unusually.
I was sure I'd see an ID.4 there, but all quiet - no one charging at all!

Something really needs to be done at Cashel to stop the ICEing as it’s going to be a sh1tshow this summer if there’s a bit of travel allowed. We’ve a lot more EVs on the road that will be holidaying around the country this year.

    Nice car btw!

I thought you're filling up the charger. I mean it's a beamer after all and heard that Ionity doesn't like local electricity hence importing premium German quality from a particular brand which beams the electrons. This is the reason for the large kidney in the last models. Larger kidney more electrolytes to beam :D

I know Ionity does not get much love since they've hiked the prices. I noticed that this month they have reached the 400 station figure with 356 live and 44 in construction, based on the ionity tracker It was their target for the end of 2020.

It seems that they kinda dropped the ball as I counted the last 10 station opened with only 2 chargers, all of them in Spain and Portugal. Spain is the country with the most under construction (10), 5 of them more than 8 months since the start.
Unfortunately for us 9 was actually 6 and very few manufacturers offer discounted prices without a hefty monthly subscription. It seems Shell and Renault are interested in the new funding round so who knows maybe we would get to 9 at some point. Strange one with Renault as they don't really have a fast charging car yet (>50kW).

    https://support.ionity.eu/en/general-questions/how-much-does-it-cost-to-charge-at-ionity

I never realised that Ionity charges in France (and Finland) are 0.79 EUR per minute.

Ireland is an outlier at the moment on 0.73 EUR /kWh, I wonder how long that will last.

I think it is because of the VAT rate. initially everyone was charging 23% and then Revenue came with a clarification that it qualifies for the reduced rate 13.5%. The same for ecars. That is the reason for the crazy number 0.268 /kWh or whatever they have now.

79c per minute is not actually that bad.
At 79c per minute it incentivise charging above 60kW.

Ireland is back on the map for Ionity. Image stolen from the presentation during the IEVOA meeting. The green markers are current state, dark ones proposed by 2025

    That's great news

Looks great, hubs closer to cities would be very useful. Typically a Dublin to Cork and back in a single day will need 2 fast charges, simply due to the location of chargers along the way

Having a HPC hub close to Cork would cut this down to a single charge session

They've started upgrading some European sites that had 4 chargers to 6 chargers, might happen here as well. Good to see the proposed 9 new sites but I wonder how long it will be before something official is announced.

I see the Wild Atlantic way is completely ignored again. Bord Failte are supposed to be doing a review of charging facilities along the route, anyone's guess when that will be published.

Ionity have been opening sites at a reasonable pace in Europe over the last 6 months, there doesn't seem to be the amount of delays involved in doing the same here. The Stafford site in the UK has planning for 17x350kW units

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,323 ✭✭✭zg3409

I believe the delays in NI could be due to extra high costs of high power network connections, similar is true with Tesla supercharger in Belfast, the cost is too high and Tesla building is rented. Ionity may also be loss making on a big scale and want to talk up future sites to deter tesla, esb and easygo from competing on hubs.

I know Ionity city north often has both chargers in use at the sane time as I get an automated alert through the plugshare app via ionity link up, but sometimes both are "in use" as one is not working. They could certainly do with updating that site and any site in Northern Ireland would be busy as most Ni 50kW chargers are broken, some for years.

Agreed, City North seems to have some reliability issues. I've never checked to see if it's a particular charger or if it's either of the chargers

IIRC, there's posts there for another 4 chargers. I'm guessing they're limited by the grid connection again, hopefully they get an upgrade as part of this expansion

To be fair, Ionity have always said their focus is on major intercity routes, so wild Atlantic way will probably never be in their radar

Not sure exactly what the bord failte review is supposed to accomplish, do they have funding to install chargers at major tourist spots? Are local councils going to cough up some euros to lure in a few tourists?

Most likely it'll be another problem that no-one in a position to fix it will be bothered solving

"No BEVs were harmed in the taking of this Photo"

I've been to Ionity Cashel maybe 3/4 times. My experience has varied:

    • Charger to the far left as you look at them (the bay u are in) was slow, never got above like 40-50kwh, when I moved ramped up to 100+. I reported this to Ionity, no idea if this was fixed?
    • ICE'ing...yeap, most times I was there they was at least 1 ICE'ed, agree with the person who said you could paint them bright pink. People who are going to ICE are going to ICE.

    https://planning.agileapplications.ie/fingal/application-details/91720

The development will consist of the:

    (i) Installation of 4 no. electric vehicle charging bays, each comprising a parking space and electric vehicle charging units,

(ii) Installation of electric vehicle power units,

(iii) Construction of a new substation,

    (iv) Erection of associated signage,

    (v) All assoiated lighting, infrastructure and site development works.-

A planning permission application appeared on the Fingal portal. The address is Circle K Clonshaugh. No drawings scanned yet but the applicant is the same who originally applied for Ionity in Mayfield and Cashel. Speculation on my part but I hope to be right.

Looks like they're wasting no time. That's an excellent location, finally some decent fast charging in Dublin and right beside both M50 and M1

    Brilliant.

I've been saying for ages that Clonshaugh is a perfect spot for a hub, just a pity Tesla didn't get in there also

M50, M1, Airport*, Port Tunnel, 2 hotels onsite, 10 mins from city centre....

That'll be that site gone now from the eCars radar forever...

*if I was a Dublin taxi driver, and thinking about switching to EV, something like this would surely push that decision over the line.

I may have rushed to think it is Ionity. The applicant is Ard services which seems to be owned by Circle K. Is Circle K finally ....? We'll have to wait and see but a good news nonetheless. The existing ecars over there is the busiest charger in the country. 14h+ per day.

From book of faces. I for one are glad of the ionity option and it will take the pressure off nearby chargers. I have driven from there to DCU to easygo before as all nearby chargers were busy, on more than one occasion. Pity it's not easygo putting in a row of chargers at reasonable pricing. Hopefully they will be positioned in a way that ICEing does not happen as the existing site is relatively busy but existing esb charger tended not to get many cars parked as it was away from the store. I hope the existing esb will be retained and that will create some competition with a backup option. I pity anyone in a leaf arriving in future as it's very likely the esb charger will be busy first and ionity does not have ChaDeMo.

They need something in Cork. There is a Tesla station in Mahon Point, but no superfast chargers anywhere in Cork.

Their pointer from the map they showed at IEVOA was way off, looked more like Ballycoolin for the M3

Or maybe they decided to add another one afterwards. They'll only install at Circle K for now and I don't think there are any along the M3, at least none close to Dublin
