A lie down with a cold compress might be in order @HeidiHeidi

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,319 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Damn, I did, sort of - but I can't remember which was which, and I didn't realise that the url would not show when I expanded the link.....

Might have another go at it later, and I won't expand the links.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,914 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

none of the links in HeidiHeidis post have #latest at the end of the URL. you can see the URLs they posted if you quote the post.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,319 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Hmmmm, I'm fairly sure some of them did..... maybe it's just not showing up in the quoted link?

As I say, I might have another go later and concentrate on that aspect.

This one I accessed from the bookmarks list - has the #latest tag, and brought me correctly to the first unread post (hurray!)

    https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058199770/liveline-thread-with-no-name-host-with-no-shame#latest

This one also..... #latest tag, brought me to correct location.

    https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2057761511/your-own-pictures-of-bad-parking-no-chat-24h-ban#latest

Suddenly all the links from the bookmarks thread are behaving themselves beautifully! But how long will it last???????

This doesn't have the #latest tag.... accessed from main home page. Brought me to top of the page containing the last post I had read (not the last page of the thread)

Had to do a separate post to avoid expanding that last link.....

So it seems that a url from the home page will not have #latest appended.

But from bookmarks it will. But won't necessarily take you to the first unread post (except right now, which is a very pleasant surprise!)

That's possibly exactly what ohnonotgmail said in the first place!

OK this is great to nail it down to the home page - at least we know where to start now - thanks!

@HeidiHeidi are you on desktop or mobile or a bit of both?

a quick check on mobile shows that links from the main page do have #latest at the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,804 ✭✭✭Glaceon

I like the new navigation on mobile, very reminiscent of the old Touch site. The only problem I see is that it doesn't seem to work to open forums which have subforums, such as Feedback and Weather.

What's the story with the new navigation on the front mobile page there is no way to collapse it back to the start.

    Never mind it's gone now

From the main page on desktop:

If you click the yellow highlighted link, no latest tag shows and you get put on the top of the last page.

If you click the green highlighted link, latest tag added and you get to where you need to be.

That is actually fixed now and the text is white (and legible) instead of black. Thanks for the reminder and sorry it has taken so long.

Do you mean the menu on the left? If you tap on the name of any forum it should open that forum for you, working here for me.

It seems to be gone now so I don't know if someone was just testing and it was reverted? But when I went to the home page on my phone around lunchtime, I was presented with the forum list in a style very similar to how it was on the touch site.

Oh yes actually, the dev did say to me that a mini-menu was temporarily exposed on mobile earlier while he was doing something but it is now gone. Please forget you saw anything, it wasn't supposed to be there 😃

    Nothing beats testing in production.

I think when I went into one of my bookmarked threads and read it to the latest post, if I then clicked back to the bookmarked thread list it un-highlighted it (showing I was up to date) but all of a sudden it has stopped doing that.

Now I have to refresh the bookmark page to update it which I don't recall having to do yesterday.

Site running extremely badly, from Asia anyway. Many threads taking like a minute or just failing with a cloudflare error.

THIS IS ALL A BIT STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS, FOR WHICH APOLOGIES IN ADVANCE!

    @Boards.ie: Niamh

More testing of where you get brought to in a thread, depending on what you click - but on mobile this time.

Clicking into threads from the main page

Bookmarked thread - brought me straight to first unread post.

Not bookmarked thread, but have read it up to a point already, showing as having 10 new posts - brought me to a random post in the middle of the second page of two - turns out I had read up to the last post on the first page before.

Not bookmarked thread, only one page long so far, showing as having 5 new posts - brought me to the first unread post.

Not bookmarked thread, very long, had read so far into it a while ago, loads of new posts since - brought me to a random posts on the page following the one I'd last read to

Not bookmarked thread, had read so far into it, loads of new posts since - again brought me to a post in the middle of the page following the one I'd last read to

Not bookmarked thread - 2 pages long, had read so far into the first page - clicking brought me to a random post further down the first page than the last post I'd read.

Clicking into threads from bookmarks list

Bookmarked thread, click into from bookmarks list - think it brought me to the first unread post.

    x2

    ______________

The above was all yesterday, 17/1/22

I was prepared to say that from the bookmarks list, you'd get brought to the first unread post. From the main menu, a lot more unreliable.

Today, 18/1/22, the first thread I clicked into was from the bookmarks list, and I got brought to the last post of the thread, missing out on the 20 or so posts that had been made overnight since I last looked at it.

Same with the second one - straight to the last post, missing out all the new unread posts since I was last on thread.

    BUT

I've just noticed (I think) that the first two threads above, I clicked on the bookmarks star, and then into the threads from the "preview" dropdown list.

Now I've just gone to the actual bookmarks list and clicked into a couple of threads, and it's brought me to the correct (first unread) post.

So, there seems to be a difference on mobile in what happens depending on what menu or list you click into a thread from - same as on desktop.

I've now run out of bookmarks to further test this, but I think that's what's happening. At least, if there is a pattern, no matter how bizarre, it will make using the site a lot less frustrating, for me anyway.

But really and truly, is there no way to standardise this? On both desktop and mobile? (Which in my head should behave the same way, but that's a whole other day's work)

Thanks so much for this @HeidiHeidi you've obviously spent a lot of time testing and documenting what's happening. I'm going to pass this on to someone who actually knows how these things work/should work and see if they can make any sense of what it happening and where things are going wrong.

Things that are still missing or buggy:

Getting a list of peoples' posts is really difficult. You have to sign in to even view someone's profile (why?). I managed to find a list of my own comments by some miracle, can't manage it at all with anyone else. Really frustrating. Banned users have no profiles at all (again - why?)

On main page My Forums My Threads and Trending tabs are covered over by a grey bar that's part of the header.

It's not possible to partially quote someone - it's all or nothing.

Look I just want to find the things I posted in various threads, that doesn't seem like that huge a thing.

Thanks are also hidden from people who aren't signed in (what lunacy is this).

Also the ability to mark a forum read on desktop. I've no idea why this hasn't been added yet.

It's in the menu with the 3 dots on top right

Rich Text Editor. To edit a paragraph's style, hit tab to get to the paragraph menu. From there you will be able to pick one style. Nothing defaults to paragraph. An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu. Some elements, such as rich link embeds, images, loading indicators, and error messages may get inserted into the editor. You may navigate to these using the arrow keys inside of the editor and delete them with the delete or backspace key.
