Replacing Timber floor in Kitchen

Hi All

Last year i replaced a floor in a small room and it went very well so this year i wanted to tackle the kitchen. Currently the boards go under the kitchen units but i dont think i have the skills to take the kitchen apart so i was thinking of cutting the boards where they go under the units and putting a beading around this bits. Would you recommend this approach or would i b better off just to get a carpenter in to remove the units ? Also if i were to cut it, would a multi tool do the job ?

Your kitchen should have a kickboard at the bottom that can be taken off easily. Usually they are just pulled off as they're attached with clips. You shouldn't need to move any units.

nope, the part where the timber goes under the floor has a unit going down to the floor, fridge also. no kickboard there , just a unit to the floor

In the 2nd picture, is there not a kickboard on the other side of that island where the tiles are?

You should be able to floor that without needing to move the unit at all.

...and I would not use a multi-tool for the cuts. Use a common fine-tooth woodsaw and a square for marking accuracy.

Actually yeah there is, but the unit sits on the timber floor so if i remove the kickboard and get the plank out then the unit will fall ?

Should he have to make cuts?

It would seem bonkers to me that a kitchen unit would be built, without a kickboard, on top of a laid floor. It would mean dismantling a kitchen to change the floor, this seems crazy?

Is it not more likely that the floor is only laid up to the legs of the unit, and he should be able to replace handily enough?

im not talking about a multi tool for the new planks, i have a mitre saw for that. I thought i would have to cut the existing planks right at the unit and put a bead around them.

Its not laid up against it, it goes under it. It makes for a cleaner finish and lots of kitchens are floored this way

It doesn't make a cleaner finish, for a floor like this that's obviously not permanent it would make way more sense to lay the floor up to the legs. It will look exactly the same as the boards still go under the unit, but it's just way easier to replace.

Do you think you could make your cuts under the unit? Is there enough room?

ah ok i understand now. So its possible it goes under the cabinet but the actual cabinet legs are on the concrete ? So to replace then the boards would just slide out ?

Yes, this is what I would expect. If you take off that kickboard you should hopefully be able to confirm, and then yes the boards would just slide out.

I would expect the floor only goes under the unit by a few cm.

I could understand someone installing kitchen units on top of a tiled floor, but installing them on top of what looks to be laminate wouldn't make any sense to me since it's highly likely the floor will need replaced long before the kitchen.

Tks, i understand now. Im still stuck with the first picture though, there is no kickboard at the fridge cabinet and the floor definetely goes under that

At the other side of that fridge cabinet are new tiles that went down last year to replace the timber in that part of the kitchen so the tiler cut the timber right at the cabinet so i wonder what he used to do that because thats likely what ill have to do at the other side now unless i take apart the cabinet

picture attached, the laminate was where the tiles are now also. I just dont know what to use to cut straight down thru the timber on the other side , lay new floor and cover with a bead
