Local folklore tells a story that some serving members of the RUC were down on a fishing trip to some Mayo lakes. Folklore says that they were ambushed in a botched PIRA attack somewhere near Islandeady. Folklore says the attack was unsuccessful and the local PIRA had to go on the back foot as Gardai went after local republicans. I have often heard this story, however I cannot find any news reports that confirm that this actually happened. Any Mayo bordies Know is this myth or reality ?
