Ursula van der Leyen likely sees McGuinness as one of Europe's biggest hitters and a Godsend to even out her 50/50 gender Commission. I wouldn't write off Trade yet by a long shot.

A week ago I said the best thing to do would be to nominate McGuinness and a male stooge to take one for the team. Andrew McDowell is that person. No eejit by any means, but he is not political and not well known, so there is no public ego to bruise.

Mairead McGuinness is going to finish her 5 years in the Commission in mid 2025 and she will succeed Michael D as Uachtaráin na hÉireann in November of that year. Get onto Paddy Power now.

I hope peter casey runs again, he’d definitely be our next president were mcguinness to be his main competitor

Peter Casey's vote fell in every election attempt after the last Presidential. If he runs again he won't get close to his figures from last time - one time protest vote and his "of course I'm a racist" thing won't have helped.

He also got very few transfers (mainly off FH-E, the Greens and FF although by that stage both of those probably came from list-fillers) in the Euro race - a heavily fractured Presidential would be decided on transfers.

Court case got under way today

The alleged breach attracts a maximum tariff of €2,500 and/or up to six months in prison on conviction.

I'm guessing if there are convictions the punishments will lean more towards the first part of that and/or...
