not that surprised that the rte guide still sells well its a habit for a lot of people dispite the array of tv guides in any paper there is a big enough cohort of people who mainly watch rte because its irish and features irish people . The same folk love to read what the rte stars are doing for xmas etc and never tire of the usual suspects telling them what they are doing .

Honestly how much would Muller be putting up? €?K an episode? Plus the multiple repeats and ads for the show its probably cheaper than having to produce an advert and pay for it to be shown

I don't know, I expect that's what they call commercially sensitive.

The company must think it's worthwhile anyway.

Problem with this approach for the government is if you maintained the current funding system you'd massively ramp up resentment of the licence fee among people who mainly watch RTE for Dancing With The Stars etc.

As I said it's probably cheaper than making an ad and paying for it to be shown, they are struggling to sell advertising, seen stuff for a furniture shop on over Christmas, kind of place that would normally advertise on local radio

The future of media commission has turned into a big waste of time as it has apparently recommended that RTE should be funded directly from general taxation, something that nobody in the Dail supports, there is also a lack of political will to bring in an new household levy, So I think we should stick with the model we already have but the licence should be increased by 16€ from 2022 (hasn't been increased since 2008) and by €1 per year from 2023 onwards.

    What an awesome idea 💡 💡 💡

Isnt the main problem the fact that lots of people dont buy a licence ? They take their chances, that needs to be the first port of call rectified before you increase it for the % of the population that are bothering to pay in the first place.

Increase TV Licence money so that RTE can do re-runs of shows from years ago, make dramas that nobody watches & pay over inflated wages to their staff. No thanks

After the way RTE have behaved throughout Covid, no way. Disgraceful broadcasting.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

The reason that RTE show so many repeats now is that it's been 14 years since the licence fee increased. Imagine if everyone's income was frozen at January 2008 rates ? In 2008, a postage stamp cost 60cent, the minimum wage was €7.50 per hour, a box of 20 cigarettes was €8.

I already pay €160 so you can have your RTE, though I dont consume any of their output. No way should I be paying more to subsidise you.

Between 2002 and 2006 it went up by over €50 according to Wikipedia so you could argue it was over priced for a long time and the current price is the correct price.

i wonder what the true percentage figure is that people actually pay.

RTE is willing to accommodate debates featuring people with alternative views on Covid but such people don't agree to appear on RTE, Gemma O'Doherty and Johns waters were both offered the opportunity to appear on a debate about Covid but they both refused, RTE also offered Dr Marcus DeBrun the opportunity but he said only if you give 10k to charity.

I'd like to see it scrapped or made voluntary.

i haven't had a TV or a device that could be used as a TV for years. TV licence fees should be added into broadband costs or scrapped altogether. the whole concept needs rethinking.

If they made one English speaking and one Irish speaking channel, one each for radio and only aired Irish made content, I'd back funding them. Opening jobs up to the public would be a nice sweetener.

Paying for foreign soaps and the like we can see elsewhere is a waste.

Privatise RTE, let them sink or swim!

How about doing away with 'Dancing with the Stars' and 'First Dates Ireland' and other so-called reality shows instead?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 381 ✭✭Ballycommon Mast

Yes I think RTE should leave that sort of nonsense to Virgin

Those are likely about the only profitable shows from an ad revenue perspective.

I expect there'll either be a tenner hike in the near-ish future; or if it changes to be something easier collected and harder to escape it'll probably go down slightly as a sweetener considering a lot of people who don't pay will have to start under pretty much any other proposal.

OP Im going to assume either yourself or someone you love dearly works for RTE.

In the UK, you can still buy a black and white TV licence and it's about £110.00 cheaper than a colour licence. Absolutely crazy stuff.

Changing the licence to a levy would save you a tenner per licence for the cost of AnPost collecting the fee and €24 because of the 15% licence evasion where AnPost don't collect the fee. A lot of fat could be trimmed off the tenner that goes to the BCI sound and vision fund then a household levy of €120 should bring in the same revenue.

Handing over more money to AnPost and RTE under the current system can't be justified.

Adam Saves Christmas - Adam was better than expected because he put the effort in, fair dues. Tubs just phoned it in with zero Christmassy vibes and zero Santaness. It was shown 14 times between the 24th to the 27th. It sickens me to think Tubs got paid 14 times for such a half arsed performance.

If the aim is to increase the quantity and quality of RTE's output the cheapest way would be to hand the gig over to TG4 and let them run the channels with rehiring at market rates as needed.

RTE as an organization needs a complete restructure.

We should get them to fight it out thunderdome style in the RTE canteen.
