Why no RTE News on RTE 1?

RTE 1 today did not broadcast a News bulletin at 1 pm as advertised on the EPG and in most schedules. This in not the first time this has happened over the last week. No explanation or apology, just adverts, and promos for upcoming programmes and then into the normal weather forecast.

Why? Surely at the minimum the continuity announcer could have either given an apology, or read the bulletin.

RTE News Now is called RTE News for some time.

I don't think the continuity announcers look at the broadcast at all. Recently they introduced one of Michael Portillos programmes as being in Mass (as it was in the listings) - it was actually California. This was a repeat and they made the same mistake when running it the first time. I know because I was interested in seeing him in Boston.

The schedule was created months ago. It was probably assumed there would be bulletins. There is very little news in the world at the moment, they maybe decided to shelve them this week but leave them in the schedule in case something pops up.

i don’t think anyone is saying there’s no news to speak of but is there any that’s worth going through the rigamarole of doing an afternoon broadcast as opposed to just waiting til this evening for the 6:01 news.

with news being just short of beamed straight into your brain these days I can see why they left it if it’s just shouting headlines of little importance.

It’s down to extreme staff shortage. Their usual lack of service at Christmas and summer peak due to so many being allocated holidays at same time. Now there’s the +Covid factor, where it seems every second person has it and they are down to less than skeleton staff. Maybe they should employ a humanoid newsbot.

I think the reckoning with Covid is coming soon enough, and it will ultimately be “into work with you”, same as with a minor cold, which does not and should not shut down a society and economy. Of course presently the authorities have to exercise caution, I understand that.

It was scheduled so it should have happened or at least an apology. They have continuity announcers who do this type of thing.

In the 1930s, the BBC radio would announce - 'News will be at 8 O'clock - if there is any!'

Are we back to that?

I wasn’t paying much attention toon to the radio today, but imagined I must have somehow missed the lunchtime news. There definitely should have been an announcement. Obviously an absence of staff, and with delays in PCR tests, this is accentuated.

A lot of them are pre-recorded or generic, and it's the same on radio. There's nothing unusual or wrong with that per se, but the idea is that the viewer/listener shouldn't notice, and RTÉ consistently makes a mess of it.

It's just a propaganda machine, organised to suit their Z list presenters and not the license fee payers, and was ever thus. Full of misery too, they just can't help themselves.

It's not just RTE and yes it's disgraceful that they could not have at least said there was no news. Christmas day 6.1 news was the same. I recorded it and got no news. Not that I cared really.

The Dad said he was listinening to the radio the other day and all the news they done was the Covid numbers that was it needless to say he was very disapointed and this is not an RTE station it's a local radio station so it's not just RTE.

I thought continuity is always live just in case something important happens - like an important person dies, or a major incident happens.

It would appear that RTE News at 1 O'clock on RTE One will return on Tuesday.

Well, that is according to the schedule published in the IT Magazine, but it was wrong before, so we shall see (or not).

Probably just on standby in case the main guys ever get sick or something comes up that means they’re unavailable?

it’s not in any way uncommon to have backups for the staff, I imagine the producers, camera, lightning, etc are all handled by different staff over Christmas (and again in the event of sickness or something unforeseen comes up)
