Question for Nvidia shield owners

I'm looking to get a streaming device for my elderly in-laws. They're not very techy (often get confused using more than one remote).

They currently have a now stick & Netflix logged in through their tv, so far so good. However they also have a very old media player which reads an external hard drive or memory key for offline content which I sometimes give them. This is about 10 years old & can only read fat16, which mean small file sizes.

I'm thinking of getting them a shield, but don't know if it can read an external drive. Does anyone know if this impossible ?

    Thanks in advance.

Works fine with both USB powered and network drives. For more exotic types of file share such as remote NAS on a different network? Easily mapped via Kodi, Plex or your preferred File Explorer app

Thanks for that. Would it work with an unpowered device? Or is it capable of powering one from it - thinking small external
