New Humidistat Extractor Fan - Troubleshooting

    Hi all,

Hoping someone can shed some light on an issue i'm having with a new extractor fan.

I've been meaning to fit an extractor fan to our en-suite for a while, so i set about fitting one in the existing vent location in the wall, quite close to the ceiling. I ran 2-core to it (live and neutral, switched live ignored, as I don't have a need for the timer or it to be controlled by a light switch). Anyway, got it fitted, and fan appeared to be totally dead. Oh well i said, back to the shop for another one.

Got the new one earlier, and said i'd check it before mounting it in the wall. Wired it up the same from the mains, and fan was switching on around 50% humidity. Happy days, I go about mounting it in the wall. Get it wired up, and it's behaving exactly the same as the first unit, nothing happening, regardless of the level the humidistat is set at. Checking with a phase tester, I verified it has power, and on the fan side of the terminal, the S/L has power too (which i'm guessing must be the humidistat trying to activate the fan). But for whatever reason, between checking it before putting it in the wall, and after it going in the wall, it's not coming on at all???

    This is the model: https://www.manrose.co.uk/product/xf100h-bathroom-fan-humidity-100mm/

    Any ideas?

If live is showing correctly with a basic phase-tester, then perhaps you have a faulty neutral.

Wire a bulb onto the L and N and see if that lights.

Deadduck. You are aware that the humidity sensor on the fan will not deploy until the Stat is moistened by the high relative humidity of the atmosphere in the En-suite. This will take some time. Have a shower and give the fan time overnight to function.

I hope you have a silent humidistat extractor. I fitted one in my En-suite and it was not silent - and it woke me persistently during the nights - and I eventually installed it in the Bathroom out of earshot.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I didn’t get a chance to check with a bulb, but I did stick a multimeter on it real quick, and it was reading just under 6 volts, which was a surprise. I’m guessing that would make for a pretty dimly lit bulb?

I’m not familiar with them at all, but when I checked it before fitting from a mains socket, it came on when I adjusted the humidity sensor down below 50%, so I would have expected it to do roughly the same when in the wall, at some threshold, but it’s not running at all.

But as I mentioned in my other post just now, it looks like the fan is receiving very low voltage, so this would explain it not running. More investigation required…

finally got to spend some time on this today, and it's working!

feel a bit of a tit, as it turned out it was the 3A fuse that was gone. what threw me was the phase tester showing there was power (or at least voltage), but the multimeter showed this was in fact only 5-6 volts. i would have expected that the fuse gone = no voltage, but there you go. every day's a school day!

thanks again for the responses 👍️
